Version 2000 works on xp, but without sound. Further investigation including use of DOSBox and VDMSound ahead.

Second bump! Sorry! Just letting you know that there's no way I can get sound for Tyrian on my comp. I'll check OG help threads and then browse web for solution. I play 2000 version, so these trouble are strange.

I'll try to fire it up again, and see if I can get sound. When I have a moment or two anyway.

I'd really like to play this one, but I always get a runtime error everytime I try to. No matter if I start it with the Dosbox or under Windows...

I get runtime errors as well. Every other version of Tyrian I have tried (v1, v2, 2000 demo) have worked perfectly in DosBox (and with sound).

I downloaded Tyrian2000 from Abandonia (should be the full version) and it works perfectly in DosBox (with sound).

Just remember to run the setup of course.

Does 2000 use the same soundtrack the original uses?

I think I'll download music from exotica and run it while playing. That's the best I can do.

I can't find it on Abandonia. Can you give a link?

The fifth episode might have new music, not sure, but the first sounded the same to me.

Everything works fine now!

But god, I'm such a looser when it comes to this game. I must have tried more then 20 times by now and I can't even get past the first boss...:(

I didn't need DosBox or anything - though I have no speakers on this machine - so I dont know if the sound works. But it played like a dream!

It seems I slowly get better. I completed several levels so far and actually I am playing the ale bonus level which is quite funny (mostly because of the tune that is playing in the background).

I think it is interesting that it really matters which weapons you choose. In most action games there are several weapons which are doing more or less the same. In "Tyrian" it is very important. If you choose the wrong weapons it will be nearly impossible to complete certain levels.

I also like that there are several game modes as well as three difficulty settings. And best thing: There is even a story (which is quite seldom in action games).

Only thing that I dislike a bit: Sometimes the screen is a bit overcrowded with enemies and projectiles and it is hard to keep an overview. I don't like it if you have to play a level several times to learn from which direction the enemies are coming before you even have the slightest chance to survive. On the other hand this is good old arcade gameplay, so I think I shouldn't complain about it.

You just need to be better at arcade games. :p I've completed this game too many times to count. ;)

You are right! I think my reflexes are a bit rusted. Back in the good old C64 times I would've laughed about an arcade game where you have shields and can recover from damage...

Will try my best to get better again!

Of course, I haven't played the game on either of the two secret difficulty settings, which should be completely over the top hard. :)

I still doubt if it's better than Xenon II or SWIV.
