Into the THUNDERDOME

Post by Zyx »

Some time ago, Tim Schafer (who needs no introdcution, unless you hate ponies and kittens) said in an interview that he'd love to do Psychonauts 2 but no publisher has shown any interest so far (probably because game publishers hate kittens). Then the Nordic gaming viking, Notch tweeted to Tim that "Let's make Psychonauts 2 happen". Then, the man behind the Psychonauts for Mac replied he's in as well. So... let's see what happens.

However, that's not all as Double Fine is also planning to work on a new adventure game! Yes, an adventure game that will at least be somewhat related to dynamic duo of Schafer and Ron Gilbert. And the real kicker here is the way they are trying to fund the game. Well, I don't know why they just don't ask Notch and Dragocen again, because both of those guys are loaded but they made up a Kickstarter page to fund it.

Some news sites claim the game would be by these two, but I think they're reading too much into it. The Kickstarter page clearly states that
a small team under Tim Schafer's supervision will develop Double Fine's next game, a classic point-and-click adventure.
I don't know how familiar you're with the Kickstarter thing, but basically you pledge money for a project (and you only pay if the project gets totally funded) and there are some rewards for big pledges. And Tim Schafer does not disappoint. For a mere $30,000 you will get a picture of Ron Gilbert smiling. Put in a 5k more and you get an "undoctored picture of Ron Gilbert smiling."

Anyway, for a pledge of $15 you'll get the finished game once it's ready. The project will go forward if it gets $400,000 by March 14th and in less than a day the project already has over $280,000 pledged.

edit: It actually hit the $280k in less than 5 hours. So.
edit: The project has hit the target of 400k in 8 hours. However, more money means more budget, which can mean more platforms, translations etc.

$686,000 by now. Sometimes I'm really amazed how the game scene works...

Well, the equation of Tim Schafer + Ron Gilbert + Point'n'click adventure game = this image.

I'm a bit worried that people might have pretty high expectations on this one. Also, I hope the guys at Double Fine close down the money pledging soon enough, because if that thing hits a million I'm not sure the extra cash is used in the most efficient way (ie. better to make two 400k games than one 1m game.)

Okay, the project hit 1 million dollars within 24 hours. Which was a good thing, because Tim Schafer promised at 955k that
$955k! Guys, I'll make you a deal. If we hit $980k I'll add RTS elements to the game! And if we hit $1M, I'll take them back out!

The Kickstarter for Double Fine Adventure finally closed at $3,336,371, which is a wee bit more than the $400,000 they originally asked for.

That's more than the budgets for Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle or Grim Fandango - so expectations are high.

Hmmm.... Then they should go make a series of say...8 games. :)
