Gate 88

Post by Drasir-Vel »

"A childhood daydream of deep space intergalactic battle inspired by Herzog Zwei, Star Control, Subspace, Homeworld, and Parsec47. "

In this game you will get to play like in the classic asteroids, but here there is a strategy element in it. Along with flying around around and destroying enemy fighters, you also have a base to defend. You will get to make different buildings, like powerplants, factories and turrets to defend your base while you're out in the field. Building research buildings allow you to research technologies for your ship to make it more powerful, and better withstand enemies. You will get to command squadrons of fighters, and bombers, and fly along with them, destroying the enemy bases.

I liked this a lot, but I have to admit I grew tired of not feeling like I was fully in control. I was being attacked right and left, and had no real feeling of wether I was surviving or dying. Had there been such a feeling this might have been a gem to me.
I loved the simple controls that let you play the game solely on the directional keys, and a few other shortcuts. More games with that sort of minimalistic interface!

A very interesting game. But I think you really have to train for a while before you are able to master it. In practice mode you are under attack nearly right from the beginning and so you don't have much time to think about your strategy and build up your station.

My first game was over within minutes and I've set the difficulty to easy. I better don't imagine what will happen if I change it to hard or even play against a human opponent... :sos:

I played this some more and things got a little better when I changed the settings and I had a little more time before the first enemies appeared. It is still a little hard to do build the station and defend it at the same time, but with a little practice it starts to get better. And of course you can use your fighters and turrets to defend your base as well, so after a while you don't have to concentrate on this too hard.

What I really like about this games are the several modes and difficulty settings that there are. I really could imagine that this is fun to play in multiplayer mode or against some opponents with a higher AI if you are more experienced.
