Doom, the Roguelike

Post by Pater Alf »

Hmm, can't believe that we still don't have a thread for this game... :wondering:

As the name says "Doom, the Roguelike" is a roguelike game that takes place in the world of the well known FPS game "Doom". So it's your task to go down level by level, kill as many monsters as you can and try to survive as long as possible. Of course you will find many different weapons and other helpful items on your way.

You might know that I'm not a big fan of roguelike games, but this one is really a lot of fun to play. There are not dozens of different key commands you have to remember, so it's easy to get into the game, which really succeeds to create the creepy atmosphere of the original "Doom" game.

Two thumps up for the developer, I really like what he created! :goodjob:

If no one else wants to write anything about this game, I will do it myself:

It's simply brillant!!! So many challenge modes to unlock, so many unique weapons to find, so many medals and ranks to earn, so many different strategies to play this game. I'm absolutely amazed.

"Doom - The Roguelike" is my new game fpr boring nightshifts and I can really play that for hours without getting tired or bored.

So do yourself a favour and try it out!

It's not dull at all. Instead it's one of the most thrilling and stunning games I've played for years...

But maybe this is a game for people that grew up with the good old games that cared for great gameplay instead of great graphics and effects.

The developer says that we should look for new updates to the game every half year or so, as the game is in constant development... Just FYI.

This is a very appealing roguelike, because it's much simpler with less controls to remember, and you don't have to worry about food, so you can take your time looking through the levels before going on. Impressive graphics isn't neccessary, if you have it all in the gameplay. But that doesn't mean graphics doesn't matter, because i think it's a very important part of a game. These types of games just make up for it by the feeling of simplicity and minimalism you get from the ASCI characters. And it's good to see a game of this type that's actually easy getting into for beginners. And also that it manages to keep the creepy atmosphere from Doom.

I have som issues with my keyboard here. I am stuck in the first screen because I need to find the > key to go downstairs, but it doesn't match the position on my keyboard it seems... Does anyone have an idea what key to use instead?
It also seemed I couldn't pick up a gun and ammo on the floor regardless how much I pressed the g key...

Also try those keys next to Å and Ø, with or without shift held down. Also Å and Ø themselves.

If you can't pick up anything, your backpack is probably full (I think you can just carry 10 or 12 items in the beginning). You have to drop something before you can pick up something new.

And if you have problems with the keyboard, you can redefine the keys by changing the doomrl.ini. Shouldn't be a big problem.

I just started the game - I am in the very first room - I cannot imagine my backpack being full. :)

That's strange. I never had that kind of problems. Maybe you should really redifine some of the keys.

Weird, i didn't have problems when playing, and i also use a danish keyboard layout.
Might try and install it again.
Edit: i got to the stairs in the first level, and used the ">" key. It's the one next to left-shift, and shift has to be pressed down.

If you are going to please let me know, because how weird it may seem then I am not sure I want to divide my gametime between Exit Fate and Doom the roguelike just now, so if you can do a validation of this then I wont have to (sounds weird to say "have to" about a game that is obviously very good").

Hmm, I just saw that there is a graphical version (including mouse support) of "Doom, the Roguelike" now. Not sure what to think about it. Following my first feeling I would say that it is exactly that kind of stuff that I don't need when it comes to this game as it takes away some of the original charm.

Well, if this version was first you wouldnt complain. ;) For me this enhancement didnt take away the charm, because ascii characters werent most important for me, rather turn-based gameplay. It's still there, so I'm happy.
