Barbarian

Post by Pater Alf »

A remake of the classical game "Barbarian" that was originally published by Palace Software in 1987/1988 (for C64, Amiga, Atari ST).

The story:

"The evil sorcerer Drax desires Princess Mariana and has sworn to wreak an unspeakable doom on the people of the Jewelled City unless she is delivered to him.

However, he has agreed that if a champion can be found who is able to defeat his demonic guardians, the princess will be allowed to go free. All seems lost as champion after champion is defeated.

Then, from the forgotten wastelands of the North, comes an unknown barbarian, a mighty warrior, wielding his broadsword with deadly skill. Can he vanquish the forces of Darkness and free the Princess? Only you can say..." (taken from the official homepage)

Game can be played in 1player or 2player mode and is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

GREAT!
Some time ago I couldn'tget my hands down as I found a Barbarian remake under development, and I really wanted to try it out, but there were only backgrounds and you could hear fighting but you couldn't see your character... Kind of a nuisance with a game like this.
So this really saved my day!
Funny how the Barbarian looked so cool back in the day, and now he looks kind of gay. (not that gay isn't cool, this was just not how I saw him - purple and all).
Currently testing Life version 2.9 (With added second child)
(Beta testing in progress)

From the screen caps it looks like the graphics are quite pretty, but they just don't seem to fit into this game. The candy store look just haven't got the brutal feeling like the rest of the game. It's a pity since I like this game a lot and the CGA + PC speaker version I have is rather out dated.

For some reason I remember Barbarian 2 better... or maybe it was the (uncovered) cover girl.

The only Barbarian I remember is one with scary monsters and pits you can falldown. But this is not Palace Softs Barbarian iirc. There were two different Barbarian series (?).

Do you like this graphics better? You can change between 4 graphical styles in the options menu. There you can also change the colours of your barbarian (but I fear you can't change the purple dress of the first opponent).

Actually, I do. I guess I'm just used to see crude pixel characters instead of smooth ones.

OT: Although I like the VGA versions of Monkey Islands I&II better...

Psygnosis also had a Barbarian game, which is probably the one you're thinking about.

Actually no. Ive found it, it is the sequel - Dungeons of Drax. I was scared as hell when playing it.

But I also played Psygnosis Barbarian - the one with odd controls where your hero doesnt stop and you perform actions by choosing right option from menu.

And I rarely if at all managed to beat anything except the green shorty. I remember this game (on C64) as perfectly unplayable like majority of 8bits.

No, I repeatedly got to Drax, it was far from unplayable.
