Saint's Row 2

Post by Scythe »

Because Chroelle demanded it.

Waking up in the prison infirmary from a four year coma (after the dramatic events of the original Saint's Row), our (anti-)hero(ine) discovers that the 3rd Street Saints gang is disbanded and three rival gangs and an evil corporation have taken over the city. What to do? How about breaking out of jail, reforming the gang and getting rid of your rivals, extreme revenge style? You know it.

Sandbox gangster game, dutifully cloned from GTA. But where GTA IV went for a more realistic kind of game, SR2 goes in the opposite direction. Everything in this game is Saturday morning cartoon style, which lends itself to fun, fun, fun.

Four mission storylines, three of which you can tackle in any order, are all very cool. If you tire of those, though, there are also activities and diversions. Activities are mapped, diversions you just hop into when you want.

Activities range from the hilarious Septic Avenger, where you hijack a septic truck and spray, well, shit all over the city to Fuzz, the fake cop show, where you dress up as a cop and enforce the law (with emphasis on force - excessive force) while a camera crew tapes it all. Fuzz alone makes the game worthwhile, when you're called out to break up a fight between pirates and ninja.... with a flamethrower. Then there's racing. With cars, motorcycles, boats, helicopters, planes...

Diversions are simpler, well, activities, such as hijacking an ambulance and playing medic, or leaving your plane at 10,000 feet to do a little basejumping. Still good for a laugh. There's also Flashing, where you put on a trench coat and, well, nothing else, and seek out a crowd of strangers to shock, or Streaking where you also leave the trench coat behind and just let it all hang loose in front of as many people as possible.

Best of all is the amazing customization. Not only do you have an extremely extensive character creation tool, there's a ton of clothes, tattoos, hairstyles, you name it. After a while you can also customize your gang, what vehicles they drive and all that... I, of course, made a psychedelic cheerleader terrorizing the city with her pink platform shoes and green mini skirt. Made for some pretty hilarious cutscenes.

SR2 is all the fun they left out of GTA IV...

Played it a couple of weeks ago. It was quite fun and reminded me the San Andreas part of the GTA-series. The game doesn't take itself too serious, is quite evil and with a nice city architecture.

I'd say it's not as good as GTA4 but it has a totally different approach although sharing a similar concept.

Worth taking a look at.

I still play it sometimes. Unlocked a bunch of new stuff a couple weeks ago. Now, GTA IV I really can't seem to drag myself back to. After the initial "oh golly!" that game really became a chore.
