It seems that Midway made several of their games freeware (e.g. Area 51, The Suffering). I couldn't find an official announcement on the Midway site, but as it was said on many different sites throughout the net, I assume that it's true...
So here we have "Rise & Fall - Civilisations at War". It's a real time strategy game in which you can take the role of famous leaders (like Julius Ceasar or Alexander the Great) and lead your nation to glory and victory over all other nations.
Here's the official description:
"Engage in awe-inspiring feats of heroism by joining troops during epic fights in third-person perspective, and personally turn the tide of battle!
Control one of eight unique Heroes including Julius Caesar, Germanicus Caesar, Cleopatra, Ramses the Great, Nebuchadnezzar, Sargon, Achilles and Alexander the Great, each with their own unique abilities and weapons.
Choose from four of the ancient world's mightiest empires: Greece, Persia, Egypt or Rome.
Enlist more than 80 unique units, including footmen, archers, cavalry, siege units and massive triremes.
Use realistically-scaled siege towers, ladders, and battering rams to annihilate city defenses and clear the way for ground forces.
Rule the seas and secure victory! Fight for control of the seas by boarding and ramming enemy naval vessels using massive, accurately-scaled warships.
Outfit warships with infantry, archers, ballistae, or catapults, depending on your own strategic objectives.
Recruit craftsman, scientists, artisans, and advisors who will help enhance civilizations both militarily and economically.
Capture new territories and establish outposts to increase your recruiting ability and train new formations of soldiers rapidly.
Up to 8 players will battle it out across numerous multiplayer game types and maps, waging all-out war on the seas, in the cities and down on the ground in Hero Mode."
It seems there is ingame advertisement in the freeware version, but I have to admit that I didn't see any so far (but I just played the first tutorial).

After downloading this for an hour plus, and extracting for 10 minutes I get a corrupt archive, and it tells me to download again... Could you maybe make this available elsewhere, so I can get a version that works? I wont risk downloading again and then the error popping up again.

There's an alternate download link (from gamershell) on the Fullgames site. One of the two links worked fine for me, but I can't remember which one.
If you don't want to try it out, you can also use this link:

I got this working, and it might be (one of) the best RTS products I have plyed for years.
Amazing gameplay with few flaws, and the hero-mode is exceptionally great. You end up sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for your hero to amass enough stamina for you to get into Hero mode, where you lead you army more like a FPS. Using bow and swords as you fight, and having the choice of the two is a brilliant idea. There are some things that could nag me, but I understand the idea why they were made that way. Chariots with blades on the wheels and spartans are special units you can build with different nations, but they are sometimes a bit too hardlived. Chariots can go out 2-3 together and kill off armies of 100's. That seems a bit unfair. Nobody but archers even atack them...
BUT AN AMAZING GAME NONETHELESS. GO PLAY!!! Except for the crew here at CWF. It will take away your time from here.

I have completed the Alexander Campaign, and I am currently playing the Cleopatra campaign. I can't believe this game never got more press!

I have had nothing of the sorts. No advertising at all.
