Action DooM 2: Urban Brawl

Post by Pater Alf »

A colorful action game that combines a classic FPS engine with some elements from the Beat'm Up genre. It reminds me more of "Duke Nukem 3D" than of "Doom", but I have to admit that I'm not a big expert for FPS games.

Let's see what the developer wrote about it:

"Action Doom return in the highly anticipated prequel, Urban Brawl... but you might not recognize it. Urbal Brawl is a completely new experience from its predecessor.

Action Doom brought Contra gameplay to DooM, Urban Brawl takes the popular 'Beat-em-Up" style and fuses it with your favourite game. Not only does Urban Brawl break new ground in terms of gameplay, but visuals as well. From start to finish the game looks and feels like a virtual comic book, the worls and its inhabitants are entirely cell shaded and te story is told through a series of Sin City inspired cut scenes.

You will fight dozens of new enemies, using over 15 new weapons to beat the life out of them. Fight across 9 brand new levels, choosing between numerous paths and decisions, each vastly changing the outcome of the game." (taken from the official homepage)

This looks amazingly cool! I will have to sink my teeth into this one eventually.

What's the difference between free and purchasable version (except extra goodies)? Games themselves are identical??

As far as I know the purchasable version will get shipped on CD and in a nice cover box. There are also some bonus maps. But the rest of the game should be identical...

Good difficulty. Very nice feel to it, and the graphical side to this is beatifully done in a cool style. The humour involved is ok, not haha funny but more "popular" humour.
There were some buts though. Mouselook made the game very buggy to watch, and playing without mouselook seems hard as there are so much debris in the game that you cant tell weapons, food and upgrades from junk lying around before getting so close to it, that you need to look down to see it.
I haven't played it through but I loved what I did play, and I plan on going back to this again.

I really like the cutscenes and the voice-acting. You can imagine the character from just hearing his voice and that adds a lot to the atmosphere of the game.

But I dislike that you can't throw away an old weapon to pick up a new one.

But after all this is definitely a great mixture between Beat-Em-Up game and FPS. Well done, Action Team!
