Dungeon Door

Post by Pater Alf »

"At last! An exciting package has arrived on the school grounds of The Hero Academy. The headmaster had ordered, from Dungeons, Inc., the latest in hero training devices – a brand new Dungeon Door. With just a few twists of mystical knobs and enchanted buttons, the Door can create a magical dungeon, complete with monsters and treasure, perfect for the amateur adventuring party.

But while the headmaster is adjusting the Door to train a group of promising first-year students, he accidentally trips and falls into the magical dungeon. Now, he’s trapped on the 10th level, and with no time to summon experienced adventurers, it’s up to six young heroes to enter the Dungeon Door and rescue him!

"Dungeon Door" is a very cute isometric turn-based tactical RPG played in a classic dungeon crawl setting. You control a small group of heroes as they explore a series of increasingly dangerous dungeons. There are six distinct heroes, each with a unique set of abilities, but only four heroes are available in any given dungeon. Dungeons are randomly generated, and filled with monsters that have distinct abilities and behavior. Quest goals are also randomly determined, and might include killing a boss, finding a particular treasure, destroying a certain number of enemies, escorting an NPC to safety, or simply escaping within a given number of turns. As they explore each dungeon, players will find healing runes, keys that open doors and chests, and ability enhancing equipment." (description taken from the official homepage)

I like the graphical design. It reminds me of famous comic book series starring animals, e.g. "Usagi Yojimbo", "Mouse Guard", "Mice Templar" or "Ninja Mutant Hero Turtles"...

Definitely the right game if you are looking for a nice isometric turn-based action RPG. It's fun to walk through the dungeon and slay all the monsters. And you even need some strategic thinking in later levels of the dungeon.

But you might be disappointed if you expect a story driven RPG with lots of items, abilities, upgrades and statistics...

BTW: There seems to be a problem with the autosave function. Several times I had to start from the beginning again, because it didn't work the way it was supposed to.

I like this game very much, but save function is really a mess. Autosave as well as manual save doesn't work most of the time and makes the game crash the next time you want to restore it. And after a while it gets annoying to start from the beginning over and over again.

DEAR DEVELOPER, PLEASE REPAIR IT!!!

And one more thing. A list of key commands in the manual (on website) would be nice. Here is what I found out by myself so far:

D = Restore game
F = Save game
L = Music Off
M = Music On
F3 = Restart game
F8 = Editor (no idea what's it good for as the dungeon is randomly created every time you play)
O = Creates a small flame (no idea what it's good for by now)

This game seemed ok until it crashed for me. Which left me with a feeling of not wantint to play it again. It seemed like the difficulty is rather high actually, or I just got unlucky.
Will try it again however - as I have to - but it wont be with joy to begin with.

Too bad this game is so buggy. It would actually have been really good had it been working properly. Save games dont work, and game crashes every time I play, within the first 25 minutes.
The concept is really good, with dungeons respawning and animals as more cudlier heroes. This would appeal more to kids than other games do, and if you had had the chance to choose your own characters and their ability then that would really make this a gem, and with an editor on board it would be a great gem...
However, the game is so molested by its bugs that it might be fun to play the first time around, but then the joy is over, and you turn to something else.
