Asterix & Caesar's Challenge

Post by Pater Alf »

"Asterix and Ceasar's Challenge" is a beat'm up game made with the "Beats of Rage" engine. While the game is a bit hard and the gameplay not always topnotch, the graphics and animations of Asterix, Obelix and their friends are excellent and the soundtrack is great. So when you like Asterix, you should give it a try.

I remember the beat'em up with Asterix and Obelix, it was released in first half of 90ies for Amiga (?). But this one doesnt look like remake... Now let me find the link...

Hmmm... It seems it's this one.

Not Amiga and not first half, but this is it.

I don't think it's a remake. This one is a mod made for the "Beats of Rage" engine. But it might be possible that the graphics are ripped from another Asterix game (couldn't find any info about that)...

They're not original. I played that damn game with the shield wall, and that was years and years ago.

After a little investigation I can say that it's one of Infogrames games, but I'm not absolutely sure.

Yah, I think it was called simply "Asterix & Obelix". I should still have it somewhere... buried deep in a stack of CDs.

You can avoid the arrows if you keep on moving upwards and downwards all the time. Once you're hit it's hard to get back on your feet before you loose a life (jumping might help sometimes)...

It seems kind of funny that they apparently think that playing the game in different languages is a difficulty setting. It is true though that I would find it way harder to play this in Spanish than I would in English (but not by much I feel). :D

I am a bit torn here. Graphics and animations are brilliant (even if they are ripped), music is great, but gameplay is poor.

Very often spears are thrown from out of screen and you're just able to avoid tem if you keep on moving up and down all the time. Also sometimes it's hard to see what's going on, because parts of the "background" are overlapping the characters and sprites.

So I spent some more time on the game and finally I have to say that it is very repetetive. There are six stages (each of them consists of 2 or 3 levels) and in fact it's only the sprites that change. There are some nice boss opponents (like the gladiators in stage 6), but after all there is no story and the difficulty stays the same all the time. Once I've finished the game I don't feel the urge to play it again.

This is one of the worst beat 'em ups I have played in my life...

The foreground obscures the action - unforgivable.
Enemies can go off screen and still attack you - unforgivable.
You barely have any moves, and no rush attack - unforgivable.
Enemies can hit you even when you're not lined up, but you have to be precisely in the right spot to hit enemies - unforgivable.
Enemies can juggle you to death if you get caught between them - unforgivable.
The common legionnaire is totally overpowered with a distance attack, longer reach than you and all the abilities mentioned above. The music made my ears hurt after a while, the graphics were ripped and should have been retouched to look a little "fuller". The engine was, well, ok, the engine was ok. The rest of the game sucked.

I feel like one of my favorite classic comics has just been violated...

It seems the things we write in here are being read and discussed:

http://www.dreamcast.es/forum/viewthrea ... read_id=80

My knowledge of the spanish language is poor, but it seems the developer was a bit upset because of the negative comments about his game and thought it was harsh and not constructive at all (especially Scythe's criticism).

Maybe someone spanish speaking can give a better translation?

And Belavi, just in case that you read that: Feel free to register and discuss your games (or mods) with us. We are certainly not as evil as we seem on first sight...;)

When I try to go into that site my siteadvisor goes nuts telling me that the site is infected with virus. I got 6 userreviews via Mcafee to support it, so clean up your PC PA.

As always this forum has freedom of speech and oppinion. Though no personal attacks will be tolerated. So Belavi, I ask you like PA to join up and talk about the game here. We respect you for making a game for free, but take the criticism as being constructive and if you feel like improving your game later on, then you can take these things into consideration - or not.

I feel freedom of speech is in danger here.

I or anyone else have full rights to say that game x sucks. If the opinion is well-argumented it's only for better. Scythe didnt write full review, but at least said why he doesnt like the game. He doesnt have to like it, true?

The problem with CWF is that it tries to host only best games. "Nice" games are usually dumped. This may be hardly acceptable, but reasons were explained in many places afair. In short: server space and care for top quality. We simply cant host everything and developer's pride from creating game is not a factor that helps the game get on site.

Hope you read it, Belavi, and youll join us.

I may have come off as harsh on this one, but I do believe that I gave good reasons for everything that I thought was wrong with it, therefore I do not see it as non-constructive, quite the contrary.

EDIT: And if I understood the last bit correctly on that Spanish forum, then I have actually played side scrolling beat 'em ups for ages, ever since Double Dragon was released in the arcade halls. My criticism stands.

I don't see that danger. Nobody demanded to delete posts or not to say his/her oppinion. It's up to the developer not to feel comfortable with the criticism posted.

Everything seems to be allright. No warnings here and I think my PC is protected quite good (checked it again after your warning)...
