* Compete with others on the World Charts
* Hundreds of songs composed by the community

* Open source, full Python source code available

Frets on Fire was created as an entry to the Assembly 2006 Game Development Competition by Unreal Voodoo. It placed first in the competition.

What is it with those Finns? Unique concept, seems like a funny game. A must try later in my book!

I wouldn't go so far as to call a Guitar Hero clone a "unique concept", but hey, a freeware Guitar Hero sounds great!

God, this game is so much fun to play!!! And it's incredible how fast you'll get better. At least with the easy songs. I tried Metallica's "One" some hours ago and I'm glad nobody heard what I did to the song. I think I'm way to slow and my fingers are too clumsy for songs like that...

Great game and if you haven't tried this yet you should immediately download it!

I will second that.
I had an enourmous amount of fun playing this, and my fingers might be more agile or something since I did pretty well from the get-go and that really made me want to try more song. I will definently return to this game when I have time to "free-play".
The score below is for the middle song in my first attempt.

I forgot to bring a proof, but I did better with an 80-something note streak. But then again, I'm used to playing Guitar Hero II...

@Chroelle

Not bad for a first attempt. After I played the game several times now, I'm trying hard to get 100% accuracy on that song ("Mystery Men"), but I fail to hit the same single note over and over again...

If you want to download new songs, you can try these sites:

http://www.finalfret.com/ (you have to register for this one)

Found a couple of good songs I want to try out when I find the time. Unfortuantely my keyboard and mouse broke just now, so I will need to play on my backup-"guitar"...

It's a darn shame that you can't play this game without having to open a connection to the developers. I simply won't allow that in my games, because there's no point, and I don't trust some random program enough to let it through my firewall. But if that doesn't bother you, here's a freeware Guitar Hero for you! I'll stick to the commercial GH for now.

A new version (version 1.2.512) of "Frets on Fire" is available. You can find it on our game info page:

http://curlysworldoffreeware.com/game_i ... gameid=130

Not much new in this version, just a few bugfixes, improvements and it should run smoother on older computers now.

If you just need the patch to upgrade to the new version, please visit the official "Frets on Fire" site:

If there's ever a "game-doesn't-phone-home" patch, I'm going to plug in my X360 Guitar controller and jam away. Until such a time, shame.

Might be because of my computer, but for me the new version desn't run smoother at all. :(

Is there anyone who still owns the old version and can give me a copy of it?

I do. Tell me how you want it...

EDIT: (That sounded gay-ish...)

Thank you! The old version runs much better on my system.

Take 10 reputation points in return.

Unfortunately I lost all my songs and highscores when I re-installed the game (no idea how I did that). But who cares. No problem to download the songs again...

A Mac version of Frets on Fire has been added to our database. Unfortunately it is not very stable and as none of the developers is a Mac user they can hardly do anything about it. So if you're a Mac developer willing to help out with this, please get in touch. You can find the contact data on our game info page:

A new version of "Frets on Fire" has been released (version 1.3.110). There's even a stable Mac version now. Here are some other improvements:

* Wrote concise instructions for building and installing the game.
* Removed runtime SVG support. All images must be pre-rasterized as PNG graphics now. This also removes the dependency on Amanith, making the game simpler to build and package.
* Reworked the build system. Now an installation package can be created with a single command for Windows and Mac OS X.
* Added textured fretboard strings and bars.
* Updated the translations.

You can find the download files for Mac, Windows and Linux on our game info page:

It might be just my computer, but for me "Frets on Fire" is the one game that gets worse with every new version. This one refuses to start on my system at all. Is there anyone else with this kind of problem?

Yes. I've had it too. It wouldn't start on my stationary PC. Or no, maybe that was the previus version. But another one i know had it installed, and it worked. So i guess it's the computers fault.
