Pingus

Post by eMTe »

Pingus is a free Lemmings clone for GNU/Linux and Windows covered under the GNU GPL. Pingus uses ClanLib and libxml and might also be usable on some other OSs like FreeBSD, but hasn't been tested there. Pingus is mainly developed under GNU/Linux, that's why the Windows port is sometimes a bit behind.

Pingus has started at the end of 1998 with the simple goal to create a free (as in freedom, not as in free beer) Lemmings clone. "Free" means you get the sources and are allowed and encouraged to change and distribute them. You basically get everything that was used to create this game. In the years it has grown quite a bit over the original goal and become something more than just a clone, it has original artwork, a built-in level editor, new actions, multiplayer and a few other features.

I am currently playing this game, and so far it seems a real lemmings-gem. If there are enough levels in the campaing then this is a topdag in my book. Woof!

Well it ends after the tutorial. Too bad actually. There are some ok levels in the tutorial, and it has alot of levels, but surely it is not finished. And being that the grouppage we point to is dead, then I am afraid this game goes no further until somebody picks it up (if ever).

Don't be so pessimistic. Except the tutorial there is also the "Halloween" levelset that was published in October 2007 (including 8 new levels). So the game isn't abandoned and there is hope to see more levelsets in the future.

Some of the new levels are much harder than the tutorial levels and it's fun to play them.

I think I will look into them. I think I might have judged this too fast. I forgot to get the newest version and look for expansions.
Will do that now. Thanks for the headsup PS.

This brings lot more gameplay, and also there are alot of playable levels, that you can play from the editor, so there is actually more to this game than what first meets the eye.
Maybe one should contact the developer and ask what his plans are for the future of Pingus? If he is still working on it then we should re-evaluate it.

I just downloaded this and was going to install it, but when I opened the archive that contains the EXE installer, I got an 'unexpected and of archive' message in WinRAR. Downloaded twice and got the same results.

Game Page says it is 12.6x MB in size, and Firefox rounded it to 12.7 so I think the file on CWF is borked.

TRied it out and got the same message. So indeed the file is borked. I am at work - anyone who can fix this?

Sure. Looks like the same thing might affect some other games.
