Stargunner

Post by eMTe »

Deep within the Andromeda galaxy, the people of Zile grow restless--and greedy. The Zilions secretly prepare for a massive strike against the nearby planet Ytima. Fearing such an attack the Ytimians train an elite squad of "Stargunners." Their mission: To strike the planet Zile first, and cripple the Zilions three strongholds, where the Zilion war fleets await the launch order. If the Stargunners can surprise the Zilions on their own planet, and destroy most of their fleet, then good will triumph at least one more time.

Originally released November 19, 1996.
Released as freeware Jun 22, 2005.

I tried playing this game and I had to use Dosbox to even get it running. Even then it was not just a little fast but EXTREMELY (as in unplayable) fast. It was over before it was really started, and I dont really know how to get past that. Please tell :D

Sounds like the case for Manimal (OG tech help - your first place to visit :D ).

First time I hear about such DOSBox behaviour. I know games from early 80ies can behave like this, but 1996 game? Weird.

You either have too powerful hardware or I dont know. Tweaking DB wont help much if game is extremely fast. Id rather try another program like VDM Sound or no emulator at all.

I think it's adjustable to some degree with CTRL+F11 & CTRL+F12, IIRC.

Just be aware that tweaking speed may completely ruin the sound. To the point of unplayability.

What are your PC specs btw?

Well I cant quite remember, but it is a new dual core bought in January, so you can imagine that it is fast - as in kick-*ss fast.

While I have the game working perfectly, it's so hard it makes me want to throw something heavy through a window. One life = 4,000 credits. I lose 4 in one mission and make about 2,000 credits. Yay.

It's very hard, but it's a commercial game gone freeware. Other than difficulty, Stargunner has a lot of excellent options, from multiple, multiple weapons to a ton of secret content. I just wish it wasn't so hard, but it is. Play with DosBox.

You can now download Stargunner from CWF and happily defend your planet, blasting hordes of enemies in the process. ^^
