The annual film festival has started and I began it with a French horror movie, Livide.

To begin with, the movie reminded me of another French horror I saw at an earlier festival, Ils. Unlike that one, at least the ending didn't completely invalidate the rest of the movie. However, from the description I expected psychological horror. What I got was blood all over the place. Disappointing, though the movie had its moments. Being French it was also kind of artsy at times (way to generalize, huh?) - in a good way.

What other movies are you gonna watch? Nazis (Iron Sky)? I am sure to see that one at some point!
Babycall altså sounds exciting (with Noomi Rapace)
Also:
By day and by night
The comedy
Hard Labor
Juan of the dead (zombie-comedy! from Cuba!)
Take Shelter (Once again the world is ending)

I am guessing you will also be watching Alien Bikini? :) And the Raid: redemption? The sorcerer and the white snake?

You got the two last ones right at least.

Juan of the Dead conflicted with something more important.

Take Shelter
Curtis is a man in his mid-thirties. His mother fell ill with paranoid schizophrenia when she was around his age, but he's fine so far. He's a loving and caring father and husband and his friends and collegues like him. But suddenly he starts to change. He gets apocalyptic nightmares, has accustic and visual hallucinations and gets obsessed by the idea to build up the old tornado shelter in his backyard. More and more he looses control about his life. Is he suffering from mental illness as well or is there something different.

The movie creates a great atmosphere of suspense, constant danger and imminence. And the viewer doesn't know if it is coming from the outside or from the inside of the main protagonist. I'm not sure if I like the twist in the end, but overall I really enjoyed this movie.

If I've been negligent in informing you of movies watched at the film festival, it's probably because it has been rather unremarkable so far.

The best thing I've seen at this point in time is Gantz, a Japanese pseudo-sci fi action flick. It's a live action remake of an animé and it shows very, very clearly. You can at times tell exactly where an episode ends and a new one begins. However, the special effects were over the top. One battle with what I can only describe as a robot who loves his boom box was worth the whole price of admission (watch it for the robot performance, it's hilarious!). Shame about the sequel though......

In the "big letdown" category, we have Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt, which was boring, pretentious and inconsequential. Man, when did Val Kilmer get so old?

I just came home from watching The Raid (which gained the extra title of :Redemption in the west, due to some copyright issues), aaand...

I AM ONE HAPPY CAMPER

I love martial arts movies. Holy crap, I love seeing guys beat the shit out of each other - by people who know what they're doing. Especially if it's not all handheld camera, shaky, shaky, quick cuts that hint at rather than show what's going on. Not so with this wonder. If you can't see what's going on, it's because they're so damn fast. Indonesians practice Pencak Silat, which is very "showy", for lack of a better word that escapes me right at this moment. Looks awesome, that is for sure.

I'm being teased about this being the first movie in a trilogy. Can't wait for more.

In other news, I saw The Sorcerer and the White Snake, and was largely bored and unimpressed by CGI that looked 20 years old.

Last night I watched The Presence, and, man, do I wish I had left the theater after the first hour or so. Ghost movie about a woman in a lonely cabin in the woods. The story was like, "Yeah, this could have potential... Ok, I'm not quite buying that, but it's still creepy... What the bleeding heck did I just watch!!????" Seems like the script writer ran out of ideas/had a concussion near the end.

You'd be surprised what kind of trailer you can make out of a movie where nothing really happens.

I was thinking during the trailer that with that much action they couldn't possibly have time for a very deep plot as well, so I was expecting that. :D

When there was two guys rolling on the floor and one shoots the other in the face I was going "Årrrrhhh hvad.....!!" (Equilant to "DUDE" in Danish) and I was sitting alone, so I can only imagine that it should be seen with "The guys".

Ohhh, you were talking about the trailer for The Raid, not The Presence. In that case, totally agree. And the audience was in fact exactly like that.

Sorry yes. My bad. I was first looking at the Presence trailer and then the raid afterwards and only the first name stuck I think. I meant the raid indeed. :)

Tomboy
A very sensitive movie about a 10-year-old girl in search for her identity. Laure moves to a new town with her parents and her young sister. She doesn't feel like a girl and so she claims to be a boy called Mikael when she meets the kids from the neighbourhood. For some weeks she she can live the way she wants and feels free, but of course she can't hide the truth forever.

The movie is very calm with long sequences that just show the kids play or talk. I think it was a good decision of the director to stay with the child most of the time and leave the adults more or less outside (except for the end and some scenes with Laure's/Mikael's parents). And the main actress Zoé Héran is simply sensational for a 10-year-old.

Die Summe meiner einzelnen Teile
A young mathematician breaks down and have to spend six months in a psychiatry. When he comes out, he finds out that he lost everything: his job, his girlfriend, his apartment and his money. He starts drinking, lives on the street and lapses into a strange world of numbers and weird thoughts. Then there is a young russian speaking boy who saves him (and from which we never can be sure if he is really there or just a figment of his disturbed imagination). They build a hut in the woods and he slowly comes back to live. Unfortunately they can't escape society and their past...

Very intense movie. So far one of my highlights this year!

I watched two movies in recent weeks, not very good ones, but ok if you just want to mindlessly relax. One is Shooter with Mark Wahlberg and the second one is American Gangster with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. The first is a typical B-movie which heavily suffers from overproduction - too many unbelievable plot twists, comicbook-like flat characters and so. The second one was intended as biopic, but if you expect new Godfather it's not there. Flat characters, fake 70-ies atmosphere, overproduction and misplaced cast - Washington as ruthless gangster (!) and Crowe as cop with strong principles. Seriously, I hope they award golden raspberries for casting and this movie was awarded. AG was directed by Ridley Scott and this name partially explains why this movie simply can't be good.

You know of any other director who would cast Denzel as ruthless gangster?

Does that make all of his movies automatically "not good"? Also, the director is rarely alone in casting roles. Mind you, I'm not saying American Gangster is a good movie.

But hey, I have plenty of irrational prejudices. Take Denzel Washington for example. I don't think the man can act at all.

I was thinking about his output from last 20 years or more. He doesnt make movies like The Duel anymore. As for Denzel I can agree. It's the kind of actor who plays mainly with his look and temperament, so he can just be himself on screen. Unlike De Niro for example who can play a madman, a gangster or a clown and he can be (or could, considering what is happening with his career) believable in all these roles. We can accept the sad fact or not, but when you show yourself to the audience you play mainly with your look, that's probably why Babyface DiCaprio is misplaced in virtually all his roles - seriously, he doesnt look like a stereotypical tough guy and movies are all about stereotypes and that's why we love them.

We'll soon see if Prometheus is a good movie for Ridley Scott. It's definitely at the top of my must see list.

Sure it will be a great movie. It will be also nominated to a couple of Oscars and will be hailed by many critics and regarded as one of the best movies ever made by IMDB voters etc etc.

We'll see in 2032 what we want to say about it. 8)
