Re: Cinema
I also saw a movie for children last week. It was "Nils Holgersson" and it gave me some nostalgic feelings as this was the first TV series I remember watching when I was a kid. Must have been in 1980 and I remember that it was always shown right before the soccer matches on saturday afternoons and so I mostly watched it with my father. I still love the series (I think I should buy it on DVD as I can't play my old video cassettes any longer), but the movie version was a little rushed. But that's pretty clear if you cut down a 26-hours-series down to an 80-minutes-movie version.

Aaaah! Nils Holgerson! I watched it as a kid! Forgot that it was that lengthy (26 hours), Im afraid being very young I didnt watch it on regular basis, like people watch soap operas nowadays.
I watched "Margin Call" and I liked it. I especially like the fact that the movie isnt about technical aspects of banking instruments (sure, they are mentioned, but only vaguely), instead it focuses on characters and psychology. There's nobody good and nobody bad in the movie and in the end it occurs that both people who support the decision and who oppose it find themselves on the same boat. Very good movie.

Not a movie, but I got my BluRay Game of Thrones yesterday. The problem with not watching TV is that you never know if you're missing something good (happens once, maybe twice a decade). Which is why I listen to all my friends. Every last one of them told me to watch Game of Thrones. So yeah, got it yesterday, watched five episodes in one run, and I'm going to watch the rest of them tonight!! I LOVE it!!

Re: Cinema
Did you get it with Danish subs? I haven't found it with Danish subs yet, but I was told to go get this asap by a friend - who got it with the subs. And of course it doesn't hurt when I try to sell this one to the wifey, that Nicolai Coster-Waldau is playing a rather praised and important role! I simply love his acting career, and well I cant argue with the wifey about him being a looker... Even as a a man I can see it!

Haywire
Would the next one who meets Mr. Sonderbergh please tell him that it couldn't harm to have a script if you want to make a movie? And maybe a real actress in the leading role? And that you can sometimes even tell stories in a chronological way? Thank you!
Unbelievable how lame and boring a simple "betrayed-tough-girl-kicks-asses" action movie can get. The only good thing about this movie was the soundtrack...

Hahaha, I was considering watching this at the film festival (in about a month), but I guess based on your recommendation, I'd better skip it.Pater Alf wrote:HaywireUnbelievable how lame and boring a simple "betrayed-tough-girl-kicks-asses" action movie can get. Kriegerin
Movie about a nazi girl in the East German province. Sometimes the movie leaves the bottom of reality for dramaturgical reasons, but for the most time it's quite hard, brute and cold. And it has a great cast of nearly unknown actors.
Young director David Wnendt seems to be pretty talented. I'm really looking forward to see his next movie to find out what he can do with a different subject.
Intouchables
Sometimes the audience is strange. There are so many brilliant movies that have hardly any viewers at all. And then there are sometimes movies that are suddenly watched by millions without any good reason. Like this one (13 millions in France, 7 millions in Germany etc.). Don't get me wrong: It is a good movie that easily holds the balance between serious and funny subjects and when it is supposed to be funny there is a pretty good timing and fine points. There is also a good cast and a director that does a good job. But I still wonder what makes this movie so special that it is such a big hit?

The Ides of March
A young idealistic man works for a candidate of the democratic party during Ohio presidential primary. But suddenly he is confronted with dirty tricks, secrets and politics and he has to decide what to do and who he wants to be loyal to.
It's a bit scary that politics probably very often really works the way that is shown in this movie... :scared

Quite the cast on that last one. It seems like ONE TO WATCH is written all over it.

It's not a very great movie, at least in comparison with other Clooney movies, like Up In The Air, Syriana etc. Speaking about my personal tastes, it's definitely the one to watch, but not the one to watch at all costs.

Re: Cinema
Shame
Michael Fassbender shows a brilliant performance as a sex addicted businessman that is slowly destroying himself. Things get out of control as suddenly his sister comes to town and want to stay for an indefinite time. The movie doesn't explain much and tells you nothing about the past of the characters (which must have been very dark and sad), but cast, the script and the dark and cold atmosphere are magnifcent.
And is it just my feeling or is Michael Fassbender in every second US and UK movie at the moment? Not that I would complain...
The Muppets
Always nice to see the muppets again, but I have to say that most of the songs (especially the ones sung by humans) were awful and the fact that they were translated to German made them even more horrible.

Re: Cinema
Ok. We had a guys night out yesterday and watched The Hunger Games.
It was actually an ok movie with a MASSIVELY AMAZING performance by the woman-lead. She played it perfectly, and the cinamatics was ok, with a feelling of sometimes-they-cant-help-overdoing-things to it. Lots of slowmotion, camera shaking and illusions, but it gave a good feeling to the movies plot. There was an innocence to the whole thing that both helped me get into the movie (this is innocent kids sent out to slaughter eachother and not mindless killing machines) but it unfortunately also gave me some thoughts towards the Twilligt-saga. Not so much a guys night out movie as I thought, but since the other real action movie in the place was Wrath of the Titans and we agreed that we didn't want to see that without having seen the first one, that got cast off. Next movie will be either MArvel Avengers or MIB 3 depending on when we get to go out again.
(Oh and I am not sure that I told you this, but I gathered a couple of my friends who are also fathers and we formed a group (FB-group called Dad's night out) where we plan every month to either go out for a cup of coffee and possibly a movie, dinner etc, or to go out and party all night. Before we leave eachother we set the next date, and that way we dont end up in the parent trap of sitting at home on a saturday night watching X-factor or some crappy show, when we could be out listening to some great tunes, watch a movie that our wifes/GF's dont want to see anyway or simply get wasted and having a testosterone-blast. We are planning on having man-dinners, going mountainbiking etc during the summer. Everyone is free to invite other members -as long as they are dads. Kind of fun concept, and so far it has given a lot to all of us.)

I'm really thinking about watching this movie just because of Jennifer Lawrence. She was fantastic in "Winter's Bone" and might be one of the most talented actresses of her generation.Chroelle wrote:Ok. We had a guys night out yesterday and watched The Hunger Games.

Babara
The three main genres of German cinema are:
a) Movies about National Socialism and the Second World War
b) Movies about the German Democratic Republic
c) Comedies that are completely not funny
This one qualifies for genre b). Not really surprising when it comes to the story (a young female doctor wants to leave the country and gets displaced into the province for that), but at least it has a great cast and a very cold atmosphere. Not bad, but I'm not sure it deserves the encomiums it got in great parts of the German feuillton.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
A spy movie far apart from the normal James Bond stuff. There's a mole at the head of the MI6 and an old spy has to find him. Thrilling script and great cast (especially Gary Oldman, John Hurt and David Dencik. But best part is the design that makes the movie look like it was actually shot during the Cold War. Very Stylish!
