Attack of the Paper Zombies

Post by Pater Alf »

"Attack of the Paper Zombies" is very nice RTS game by IndieBird (developer of "Pandora's Box"). There are not as many options, weapons and constructions you can build as in many other RTS games, but the ones that are there work pretty well and so it's good fun to play. You can choose between certain missions and randomly generated maps.

Here's what the developer wrote about it:

"Attack of the Paper Zombies is a strategy game where your small band of space marines hold off and defeats a giant horde of alien zombies. Even though there are hundreds more enemies than your soldiers, you have some aces up your sleeve. You can construct automated guns and minefields that rip the zombies to shreds. You can also order the use of grenades or call in a chemical barrage.

The goal of the game is to exterminate the zombie infestation. To do this, you need to destroy and capture all of their hives. Watch out though, the zombies are capable of evolving new powers and defences. It’s up to you to adapt and counter their mutations."(taken from the official homepage)

I have spent every single gaming moment playing this since it was posted here yesterday. It is really frustrating, tactically demanding, time consuming and the upperhand turns at a single mistake...In other words this is pretty good. Should it have gotten a perfect score in my book it would have needed an editor. The random maps alone do not cut it for me - but make no mistake - this is a GREAT game.

Controls could be a lot better in this one. First, it is extremely hard to "find" your soldier again after he constructs the building, because he is hiding somewhere beneath the building icon - for a game requiring extreme pace in some moments this is really uncomfortable. Second, it also takes lot of clicks to find the monster's den hotspot, especially if it is surrounded by hordes of enemies.

I didn't have any of these issues, at least not in a way that disturbed my game too much. If you drag a box then it is easy to get a hold of all your men even when they are done building. The monster den hotspot is also a matter of rightclicking a few times over the den, and then succeeding, but as you right click either once or twice you can see that either your men moves slowly towards the target when there are no more enemies to face or they simply stumble into the battle killing off everything.
I did however feel that the prize of changing someones skill/type/weapon wa too high, and I would have liked to have been able to choose their wepaonry from the beginning. It more or less meant that I always ended up using riflemen for everything. And then my strategy was to try and shock'n'awe and then at times giving back the conquered zone so I could get points for a RETAKE when I won it back. You have to be prepared however that it means giving the zombies more skills along the way, so it is not a good tactic in the first maps - only when they tend to get all skills eventually anyway during gameplay.
It is still one of the games I return to time and again, and I would still enjoy an editor a lot. Letting me build my own maps would be cool - but it would be even cooler to be able to choose the amount of men, what weapons they use etc...
