Fred the Parachuting Flea

Post by jayenkai »

I made a nice Flash-style High-Score based game, this week, but before I upload it properly, I'd like to see if the online elements work..
So, as with some of my other stuff, you folks are about to be my guinea pigs!!

Download the game here

Fred is a simple game.
Move the mouse under Fred, and click to make him leap through the air.
Each time he grabs a bit of pollen, his combo will increase.

The further his leap, the more it earns, and the more he's grabbed, the higher it multiplies.
It's simple enough!

You have 6 "Ground hops", so aim for as many bits of pollen as you can, to keep him in the air as long as possible.
There's also little flower pieces, which give you even more points, and for an added bonus, bounce Fred off the walls for the fun of it!

Online : Hit the 2nd tab, on the right of the main menu, and you enter the Online area.
Type in a username and a password

I haven't yet setup any "I forgot my password" stuff, so... Something make sure it's easy, and that you'll remember it!! You'll be using the same user/pass for ALL my future games!!
I'll get around to the webbased extra stuff later..

Once you've entered a name+pass, click Login, and .. it'll login.
The scoreboards currently take a couple of clicks before they update properly.. This is being worked on!
But otherwise it should work happily.

Let me know if it doesn't!
Ta muchly...

Do i see a bit Peggle inspiration in this game ;)
It's quite fun. Only thing i would like is to have a bit more stable flight paths, but maybe that's what makes it challenging.

Unintentional, but yep, it is a bit, isn't it!!
Fred was originally meant to be a Space Munky, but I've done way too many of those, lately, so I recoloured him into a Flea, instead...
A basic "Jump to the next platform" game got a last minute switch, and this was the result.
At one point I did find myself thinking about a nice big zoom in, when you made a large hop from one side to the other... at which point I found myself thinking exactly what you did.. "Oooh, that's a big Peggle!!".. so I didn't bother to add it, so as to avoid comparisons..
...
Guess that didn't work ;)

.. Might end up adding it in, now!

Did you try the online scoreboard?

update
I've done a quick "Had time to make it nicer" update, so if you've previously grabbed it, grab it again (same link)
Flashy circles, nice choir'y sounds, and background stars seemed to be enough niceness for this one!

I also played about with the physics a little.. it's a bit smoother, now!

The online highscores seems to work alright. I could see your score and my own low first attempt score :)

What can I say, I've been practicing ;)
Make sure you grab the slightly newer one.. Makes things a little easier.

I think that's as good as it's getting. It's turned out quite nice :D

I don't have much time, so here's only a short feedback...

Online mode works for me. But sometimes a new highscore doesn't show up immediately, but only after I've played another game. Sometimes it was also shown in the offline highscore table and vanished after a while again (probably after it was shown in the online highscores).

Game itself is fine, but controlling is very hard. Maybe turning down the mouse sensivity would help. And I also encountered a little bug when I played for the first time. Fred jumped straight out of the screen and never came back (so I had to quit the game).
I dont think trying to pass the screen in computer game once per 500 tries makes you a geek. Rather a dangerous psychopath.
D'oh!! The floating point issues...
gah!

Since my old half-dead celeron died in a nasty way, I've been without a proper test-bed system.
Guess I forgot about the occasional freak-outs that low-low numbers do.
..

I really oughta try and get that system up and running again.

OK, I'll fix the occasional freakout.

Um, the highscore issue slightly worries me. I thought I'd fixed all it's quirks, but. Guess not. Gah!
Glad you'd tested it, though! Many much thanks!

I'll get back to it, and let you know how it goes!
