LV-426

Post by Derbiangames »

Hi, I've made a remake of the 1987 first-person Aliens game.

Overview

Game title: LV-426
Current version: 1.5
Release Date: 22.2.2010
Genre: First-Person Shooter / Remake
Author: Derbian Games
Status: Freeware
Download size: 14 Mb
Website: http://derbian.webs.com/lv-426
Download at CWF: http://www.curlysworldoffreeware.com/games/view/430

LV-426 is a remake of an old first-person shooter game called 'Aliens', published by Electric Dreams in 1987 for the following platforms: Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum and MSX. The game is based on the second movie in the Alien movie series.

The action takes place in first-person perspective, with you seeing the view through the helmet camera of Ripley and the Marines. You move the crosshair of your pulse rifle to track the aliens or turn around in a room, with the camera following the gunsight.

Game supports 2-player split screen co-op.

Story

Contact is lost with the colonists on the planet LV-426. Ripley reluctantly agrees to accompany an elite squad of Space Marines to the distant planet to investigate the situation. On arrival they find an eerie, deserted base bearing signs of a savage struggle. It is your task to control her and the squad to penetrate the base and rescue the survivors, if there are any...

The crew have set-up a Mobile Tactical Operations Bay (MTOB) in the Armoured Personnel Carrier, just outside the colony base. You will remain here and direct the other crew members around the base using the MTOB to monitor their progress.

As darkness descends, Alien warriors enter the base where you and your companions are waiting. Nervously flicking the safety catches off your smart guns, you advance...

Very well made! I don't remember the original game, but this one is definitely pretty cool. I wasn't able to succeed yet, but I think I will try to do so some more.

My biggest problem seems to be that I run out of ammo after a while and at the same time there is at least one alien in every room which makes it hard to go on without loosing soldiers.

BTW: I saw that I can damage the doors by shooting at them. But is it good for anything? It seems I can still use them and the aliens can still enter the room as well. And another question: When the aliens cut down the power, is it gone forever or can you repair it?

Thanks for the comments.

Ammunition is indeed very critical in this game. The armoury ( Room 28 ) has an unlimited supply of ammo, but can't easily be reached from the eastern parts of the complex.

You can block your crew members from going through a door by shooting the lock. If you later need to use that door, you will have to shoot the door itself to get through.

The power can be fixed, but to do that you will have to find the generator room.

Ok, I found the amoury now, but looking at the map, I still have no idea how I should survive the rest of the game if it is the only one. But maybe it's not really realistic to survive in an alien game and it's more a matter of when you die than if you die... ;)

I must say that I would've liked difficulty settings for this game. as it is you just have the choice between very hard and impossible to beat (when you turn of alarms, minicams, and map.

Good game nonetheless. It's atmospheric and sometimes even a little scary. After playing I'm in the mood to watch "Aliens" once again.

The first version of the remake didn't support saving games at all and also didn't have mouse aiming. After adding those, I was afraid that the game might become too easy, so I made the game itself a bit harder. Probably a bit too hard for first-time players. I myself have played it through so many times that it's actually quite easy, and thus difficult for me to figure out how it would work for a beginner.

In case you didn't notice, you can quicksave/quickload with F5/F9. This is much quicker than doing it through the menu. The 2 most important factors in this game are probably time and ammo.

I remember this, though I gotta admit it was one of the last games I would have expected a remake of. ;) Be interesting to see what I'd think of it in this day and age. :)

Well this was a creepy experience - in a good way - and I had the same problem as PA. I ran out of ammo within minutes, and when I got hit by a large attackwave I lost my remaining 4 men within 30 seconds. The alarm thingy is really useful and enerving. :)
I liked the feel of the game, though I must admit I tried to cheat to get further in the game, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. :)
Could you perhaps post a spoiler?

You can download a map from the official homepage. It will make the whole thing a lot easier.

I really liked this game. It really gives the creepy feeling of being on a dark, abandoned, alien infested base. I got to around wave 6 when the light in all the rooms turned off.
