Terra Fire

Post by Drasir-Vel »

An award-winning old game. Once commercial, but now the full verson is given to the public for free.´

The story:
Rebel forces has stolen government nukes, and secured them in heavily defended underground bunkers. They threaten the empire to surrender within 24 hours or face the conseqences. You are sent on a mission into the underground bunkers to capture the nukes and tow them out, and into hyperspace. Conventional crafts are not able to navigate these underground bunkers, so you have been given a top secret, highly manoeuverable assult craft. It's code-name is TerraFire.

Once you find the nuke, your ships tractor beam will tow it, and you have to manoeuver it along narrow passages, and past mines, flamethrowers and chrushers. The nuke is almost as heavy as your ship, so that's easier said than done. And once you start towing the nuke, a countdown sequence will start, and you have to get out within the time limit.

Sometimes, when in hyperspace, you will also encounter asteroids and other anomalies, which you must destroy to move on to the next level.

I use DOSBox for this game, but it may work in Windows XP's own DOS emulator.

This game was so frustrating to play tht I ahd to quit after several attempts at level 2 (of 26) on easy setting...
The controls are purposely to hard to handle for new players and that is just shooting yourself in the foot right there. I might have played this game more had I actually bought it, but not for free. I got my moneys worth. :)
Simply too hard, which is actually quite sad, because the idea is cool enough to make a good game out of it. It hasn't been helped by time this game - though there might be some hardcore gamers out there looking for a new game to master and spend ages on - then this might be it!

Come on, it's hot that hard. On easy level I made it to level 3 on my first attempt without even loosing a single life. Once you know how to control your ship, you can navigate it quite well.

I don't have the time right now to go on playing, but I'm looking forward to continue as soon as possible.

I like this a lot and I think it's not frustrating at all. I got to level seven on my second try and I didn't even use the save points. You get what you want here, choose easy difficulty and it is really easy (at least for the first few levels).

Handling the ship is only hard for the first few minutes, then you get used to it and control it pretty well. It only changes back to hard when you get the nuke and have to be careful, but that's part of the fun in my eyes. Best strategy is to shoot down everything before getting the nuke and use the health packs whenever you can.

There are also lots of bonus lifes you can gain, so if you use the save points (there are a lot of them too) wisely, you can get very far in the game without any big problems.
