Spelunky

Post by Scythe »

"Probably the easiest way to describe Spelunky is that its (kind of) like La Mulana meets Nethack - every time you play the levels, items, monsters, and so forth, are all procedurally-generated. And the terrain is destructible and there are quite a few ways in which the various game elements can interact with one another."

This is... fun! Platform game with randomly generated levels. Sounds strange? It rocks!

Especially the title is interesting. Spelunka in Polish means - cant find proper informal british/american word - cheap, disreputable drinking establishment. It's also German word afaik. Wonder where Derek heard it. ;)

This games best point is that you'll never play in the same level. The levels are randomly generated every time you play, and that gives much replayability. Then you won't get that feeling of being tired of going through the same place for the hundredth time. This combined with the gameplay that made Cave Story so popular, makes for a game you won't get tired of very soon.

Great retro game that reminds me a lot of "Montezuma's Revenge" (mostly because the cave setting). I always like it if there are randomly generated levels as you always have to react to new situations and can't simply learn the level design to make playing easier.

Music and graphics are very nice, but it takes a time to get used to the controls (and then it's still hard to beat certain enemies). Might get easier if you configure the gamepad in another way.

Editor is a nice idea here, because it gives you the chance to create your own game if you don't like the randomly generated levels.

Spelunky has gone pro and is out on Xbox Live Arcade. Vastly expanded, I think. And changed. No more random dungeons.

Gamespot gives it 8.5/10: http://www.gamespot.com/spelunky/review ... w-6385497/

I understood that the random dungeons were still in there. At least this according to this review.

But of course we like you, spambot. It's really nice to introduce yourself on a Spelunky thread and not on our spambot introduction thread.
