Nemesis (by Ovine)

Post by Pater Alf »

Another remake of one of my favourite sidescrolling shooters of the 80s. This one was made by Ovine by Design (developer of "The Nameless", "Total Eclipse" and "Quantasm") for the Retro Remakes competition 2006 and as far as I can see it has the original level design and the original music (which is very cool).

Sorry but this one isn't quite me. A bit sluggish in the controls, too slow moving ship and too hard too fast. I can hardly get to shoot enough ships to get powerups, and as such I get slaughtered way too soon, even with playing a great game.

I would say that it's a very true remake. Nemesis was always hard as hell and you had no chance if you didn't have fast reactions and know the level design perfectly. This remake by Ovine has the the original music (which I like very much) and iirc the original level design as well.

And as in the original game I fail to survive even level one most of the time, but I don't care at all. I can play it for hours without getting frustrated.

And about the ship being too slow: Right in the beginning you should take the first few bonusses and use at least four of them for speed-up. Speed shouldn't be a great problem after that.

I was moderately excited when I saw this, seeing as I haven't played any good classic freeware shooters since Opentyrian. A lot of things were missing from this game, though, such as a windowed mode (yeah i know its minor, but this isn't the type of game you are gonna want to have filling up your whole screen. It's more of a game that you pull up to play while you're doing work, or checking facebook, etc.)
One of the worst parts about it is that it's not newcomer-friendly. An inexperienced player would be ripped apart dozens of times before he/she even gets to the first checkpoint, greatly discouraging him/her from playing the game further. Plus they should make the easy mode.. well.. easy (I can see why there's no hard mode..)
As for the gameplay, It's very fast-paced and exciting (with a load of frustration.), and once I got used to it, the game became lots of fun as I found myself progressing through the levels easier.

Always funny how different tastes are. I hate to play in windowed mode, so I never ever missed that. I wouldn't even realize if it's not there. Good thing that you are around now to see that kind of things.

Well, it's a remake and that was the way arcade games were back in the good old 8-bit times. No savegames, just a few lives, incredible hard, frustrating and though (in an interesting way) very satisfying.
