H~S : Horizontal Shooter

Post by jayenkai »

Shoot the folk on the right.. They're mean, and can shoot plenty muchness, especially when in big groups!

Guard the folk on the left. They're your extra lives! The baddies can still kill 'em though! ONO!!

Folk on the scoreboard so far don't seem to have picked up on this, yet.. So.. as obvious as I thought it was.. doesn't seem to be! so I'll post this for everyone to pick up on it!!... Just type on the titlescreen to change your name!! Just type!!!!

Damned! More and more you get one of my favourite independent game developers. Once more you created a game (in just one week) that is simple yet addictive and that looks and plays beautiful. Two thumps up for that!

:goodjob:

And now I have no more time, because I'm going to crush your online highscore... 8)

Edit: There's a little bug. The words "Game Over" don't disappear when you start a new game (after you died) and stay in the background instead.

There is indeed!

Fixed.
Also, the difficulty's been tweaked... a bit.. ;)
I've had to reset the highscore table to do it, mind.. But it's all the better for it!

1. HS horribly slows down when too much happens on screen. Maybe you should include an option of removing flight traces. Or remove them at all? Not sure if it will speed the game up, but enemy bullets will be more visible for sure. ;)

2. All ships I have to protect (at least that's how I understand the concept) usually die before 3rd wave ends. Does their presence affect gameplay in any way or they're just for fun?

3. How many waves are there? Infinite number?

Good job!!

1. On the titlescreen, there's a list of F keys to tap, for different things.. Bottommost is a "Background" option. You should be able to turn that off.
However.. I'm not sure if it'll help when there's WAY too much going on! That's a PC 2D issue.. 2D sucks on PC's, always has done, always will do.
With our 2+Ghz processors, and super duper almost Ghz Gfx cards, we should be better.. Really not sure why we're not!!

Sucks!

2. The left hand ships are your extra lives!!! Crazy that the online scoreboards have folk keeping them until wave 12!! Seriously, WTF?!
Once all your little guys are dead, the enemies will focus on you.
If you start a wave without any little guys, all the enemy surround you, and give you a good old ass kicking!

3. It's an infinite number, although at a certain point (Um.. Wave 16?) it just becomes a bunch of random pickings, 'cos I couldn't think of any more ships to draw ;)

Random pickings you say... I wonder if there's a way to upgrade the game to sort of Warning Forever thing... :?:

You mean to create lots of large Boss waves, instead of little baddies all the time?
Kind of a H~S-Badass!!

OK, you wanna help make it happen?

(Keyboard shortcuts are for Paintshop Pro 7, you might need to figure these things out on your own!!)

Image size 256x256 pixels.

Black background, White lines.

Single line tool, No Antialiasing..

Draw lines to create a ship's outline..

Copy ship's line, without the black background. (Ctrl-A, Ctrl-T, Black, Ok, Ctrl-C.. ie, just copy the white!)

Blur the image. (Effects-Blur-Gausian Blur, 2.00.. Try your best to get a nice glowy blur!)

Lighten the image, but scale down the black (Shift-B, Brightness 64, Contrast 64)

Paste the original line back on top again, lining it up to be spot on where it was.... (Ctrl-E)

This gives you that nice glow/hard line effect.

Make me some ships, and I'll make the game! (eventually, I'm currently working on Alien Deathmatch 2...)
Feel free to add rules for the ships, extra sprites for moving bits, or whatever you wish..
Go nuts!

I wasnt thinking of bosses only, but of enemy ships in general with their look and attacks based on player's strategies used in previous levels. That would give you not only infinite number of waves, but also infinite number of possible ships. :D
