EA released their Command & Conquer for free download as part of their promotion for the upcoming Red Alert 3.
From the official site:
Today, August 31st, 2008 marks the 13th anniversary of the storied Command & Conquer franchise, which has sold over 25 million copies to date. And to celebrate this milestone and this October's highly anticipated return to the world of Red Alert with Red Alert 3, we are giving away one of the original games that started it all, Command & Conquer Red Alert, for FREE.
I know there have been talk about this for some time. I think alot of people expected this. But that does not make this any less cool. Once more a developer releases a game for free that they have no longer any sale of. This is moving in the right direction.
I unfortunately doubt that it will be released to any other place than their own website But that is still free
Currently testing Life version 2.9 (With added second child)
(Beta testing in progress)

And you are right about that. They say it friendly, but they say it clear on their downloadsite: "Please do not mirror the files on your site. Please only use the download links available here."
But as you said before, they made the game free, so there's no need to complain.
One question (as I have never played C&C: Red Alert): There are two different download files on the site (the soviet disc and the allied disc). Do I need both of them to play the game or is it just the same game with different parties you can play?
