Glest

Post by Pater Alf »

Don't know how we could have missed this game so long...

"Glest" is a great real time strategy game and regarding graphics, music, atmosphere and actions you can perform it is much better than the most freeware RTS I know...

Here's the description from the official homepage:

"Glest is a free 3D real time strategy game, available for several operating systems and that can be modified using XML and a set of tools.

The core game allows the player to take control of two completely different factions: Tech, which is mainly composed of warriors and mechanical devices, and Magic, that prefers mages and summoned creatures in the battlefield.

Glest takes place in a context which could be compared to that of the pre-renaissance Europe, with the licence that magic forces exist in the environment and can be controlled."

I am certain it was mentioned somewhere, but I dont get a hit when searching for it....I have it on my HD and have had it there for quite some time. I remember there ws some problem at that time, since I didn't play it longer than the intro....
EDIT: Dammit... I just searched my HD and found it in my "Remember to make gamethread about this"- folder... There was no problem.

I have alot of different folders.
I have an "avatars" folder, a "should make a game thread" folder, a "done" folder, a "ready for upload" folder, a "make screenies" folder, a "permission" folder, a "should make request thread" folder and a "games to validate folder".
It helps me keep track of what to do next. However I only keep the .rar files in these folders, and install all games into my Freeware folder.

I found some ways to avoid being rushed in the beginning of the game, which led to me having a lot more fun than Pager I think.

This game has some real cool graphics, and the idea is indeed good. However some suggestions for improvements would be:
- In-game menu (Ability to save and load)
- Editor (Where you could build your own scenarios...It doesn't seem that hard to put together a level)
- An "idle villagers button".
- The ability to collect more than 12 people in a group.

I liked the food factor even though it didn't have too much importance, and I liked the fact that it took time (but not a defined time) for ressources to disappear. Also the weather has to be mentioned, and teh night/day cycle. A great idea, which truelly adds to the gameplay and feel of the game.
I do feel mor units/techs/buildings could be implemented, but also for a freeware game I believe these guys did an excellent job. Definently recommendable!

Regarding graphics, sounds, music and atmosphere "Glest" is simply the best freeware RTS game I played so far. Just look at the weather effect and the day/night circle. These things are really amazing.

Regarding the gameplay, it' is hard to beat the game in single player mode (except for the missions - some of them are very easy), but it's not impossible when you find the right strategy. And game doesn't get repetitive so soon, because there are several different units and buildings to build once you upgraded everything.

The only thing the game really lacks is a campaign mode. The lack of an in game menu (with the option to save and load) isn't that bad in my eyes. This way you are not able to cheat. On the other hand you really need time if you decide to start a game.

@Chroelle
There seems to be an editor. You can download it (together with other tools) from the official homepage.

Glest was added to CWF's database. You can download it from our game info page:

I don't know if you guys have heard about this. MegaGlest (not a great name) adds a load of content to the game, including four more factions, various bugfixes, add-ons, etc. I prefer this version to the original version of Glest, so you should check it out to see if it's something you may be interested in. You could possibly offer it as an alternate download.

Thank you for the information. I think we really missed that. Looking at it I just saw that there are also several mods for "Glest". Might be interesting to take a closer look at those as well.
