Walkthrough button and way to read them on site

Post by Chroelle »

Well I just stumbled on the fact that we link to walkthoughs as a donwload, when it would be way cooler to have them load up on the site, like reviews. Is this doable, and in that case we need to place a walkthrough link that should be activated when a walkthrough is submitted. It could also be cheats, hints and such that was submitted. But for now I think we are going forward in the WE WRITE WALKTHOUGHS lane. More than one game only has a walkthrough on this site and nowhere else. I think that is a very good way to go for us. So maybe we should do something more about it!
Oh and we should have a policy saying that if the text is copy-pasted then please refer to Curlysworldoffreeware as a sort of cudos for making it (available). Or we could always just add a mention in the middle of the text as most people submit stolen text without reading it through. Just a tiny parapgraph in the middle. Saying something like:
If this text is placed anywhere else than www.curlyworldoffreeware.com then somebody took it from us, and look the poor sod wasn't even caring enouh to read it through. Please visit our site to support us making more exclusive walkthroughs. :D

Personally I think walkthroughs spoil adventure games. I like to get a hint, when I'm stuck, but I don't want to see the whole answer to solve the game. There's this cool interactive site (can't find it right now, sorry) that gives hints how to solve problems. They are on several levels. First you just get a pointer where to start, then you get a more focused view and finally you get the right solution.

This way the player has to still think and not just do what is being told. So it's not spoiling the game, just making it more easy (Especially 'cause usually my problem is that I haven't found the right pixel or I thought I tried something already).

Doing interactive solution service might be a little harder and writing a hint guide might take much more time than plain solution, but personally I think it's much more rewarding. Also having some sort interactive solution thingy would make the copy-pasting harder.

It's a fine idea (and I've seen it done before with mixed results), but I don't think we have the resources to do that, neither coding nor writing. Some of us do sit down to write walkthroughs though, every once in a blue moon, and as things are right now, those can be easily put up.

Besides, I'm not in total agreement with you. What I want is sometimes just the damn walkthrough, so I don't have to click through 3-4 expanding links 200 times just to get my solution.

I've never had much of a problem with searching a walkthrough for the solution to one problem, then playing on by myself, either. But I guess that's a matter of discipline.

I noticed that some websites do direct linking to our pictures. This naturally generates some extra traffic for us. Thus I did a lil change to screenshots we have

(I also accidentally deleted one of the biggest and most crucial files we have, but thanks god I had left editor open, so I was able to save it again... PHEW.)

For example. They have a good way to show hints.

A way to do that effect and not rewrite everything is to make compromise and make stylesheet that defines all paragraphs to be invisible and only visible when mouse is over a paragraph. Sure, it's a problem if the paragraphs are long, but ...
This way with some javascript magic, it is also possible to show the whole walktrough for those who don't want to peek.

Zyxxie? Is this something you will look at? (in the far future)

I am not sure if we really want this currently as we only have walkthroughs for so many/few games currently. It would seem weird to do it now.
I think we should simply have a way of showing walkthroughs on our pages like we do with interviews, instead of people downloading a document.
