Reputation System.

Post by Maz »

EDIT: 11. JAN 2007:

I changed the reputation system to NOT decrease points when one gives positive reputatin to someone. Giving negative rep still decreases giver's points too. I will propably add points that were given away before the change, back to the givers - that seems to be fair in my opinion. Next change I'll do will change the amount of reputation needed for star symbols...

Hi deee Ho peeps!

As some (most?) of you have already noticed, we have now a reputation system installed. I cannot take the glory from this mod, since it was built by some fellow in phpbb forums. And it fitted in our heavily modded forum engine amazingly well - only minor corrections was needed.

Purpose of the mod?
Well, the purpose is to have fun. To reward the users from quality posts. I know that at the moment our user base is smallish for this kind of a sustem to work great, but I hope we however find it nice ;) I will not be moderating the reputations - at least not for now. However I wish we would use it to give reputation out of the people for good posts / deeds, not just because someone has a birthday etc... That way receiving reputation will stay meaningfull. It's nice to know someone appreciates your post/work.

And finally, here's how it works.
You can give positive or negative reputation to user, and leave a message for him too. The reputation is linked into some post. When you read exceptionally good posts, you can click the lil +/- image under poster's avatar. Then you can decide the amount of reputation you wish to give, and whether it is positive or negative. You may also leave a message while giving reputation. I would like to encoutage you to use messages so everyone would know what was so good in that post.

NOTE: WHEN YOU GIVE REPUTATION, YOU WILL REALLY GIVE IT. THIS MEANS THAT YOU'LL LOSE THE AMOUNT OF REPUTATION YOU WISH TO GIVE!

Now, please note that when giving positive reputation, receiver receives a bit more rep than you give (and lose). That way the total amount of rep points on the forum keeps increasing - unless we give that much of negative rep ;)

Finally, you can naturally only give as much of rep as you have. This leads to a question how much rep do I have. Reputation is also gained from posts. So everyone who has posted on forums, should have some rep to give. The exact amount can be seen by hovering mouse on top of the stars indicating amount of rep. (stars are on profile and posts).

If someone has given you reputation, you should see a word Votes: in your profile and posts, and after it there should be amount of votes given. When you click on the votes text, you'll see the details of given/gained rep. In that rep stats page you also have a link to global reputation, which shows stats concerning all users.

Finally, enjoy the repping, and have fun :)

We have some members who actually were the creators of games on site. As I think members receive some reputation for submitting games, writing reviews etc. shouldn't the actual creators of the games who bother to come here receive a good amount of reputation (as a default, I mean, not necessarily from other members)? Or maybe they should receive points. I'm just thinking they should have something for creating the game and being nice enough to becoming members here as well.

Little off-topic, but I think those game developers also could get some sort of 'Game Developer' -tag into their profile.

I like the tag idea. But I meant the reputation system to be equal for all members, regardless of them being part of the crew or not. Or being game developers or not. I intended the reputation to be something that people in here can give based on their feelings.

Furthermore the reputation was meant to be a system which is clearly linked to posts, so that good posts would be rewarded (and spammy punished).

Only thing I believe should be changed is losing points when giving reputation. I will propably change that if I find the time one day...

But the developer tag/title is a great idea :)

In fact, a different developer profile - fillable by the developer him/herself would be great... The developer tag could then link to this profile...

actually, I changed the rep system to not punish for giving points. Giving negative reputation still decreases the points though. I am planning to give back the points user has lost by giving reputation - when I'll find the time...

Oh, I did not test the change, because I had nothing to give :D
