Wilfred, the Hero

Post by Pater Alf »

A very interesting role playing game about two buddies (Wilfred and Kyr-Stan) who have to save the world. But of course that's not so easy when the hero has doubts about his destiny. Story starts where it normally ends (with a final battle) but I can't tell you much more about it, because I only played the game for half an hour yet...

Game is made with RPG Maker but has a very unique system of fighting, levelling up and upgrading skills. Also it is beautiful drawn (I don't think the developers used standard tiles) and has a very nice soundtrack.

Developers: Brandon Abley and Teo Mathlein

Download size: 40 MB

Year: 2006

Status: It's on CWF...

This game is something special in the genre of RPGs made with RPGmaker (might not exactly be an own genre, but I'm sure you know what I mean).

Beautyful drawn, great soundtrack, a unique system of fighting and levelling up, and a hero that is full of fear and doubts (he's so afraid, that he hides under his blankets at night).

The world might not be as big as games like "Laxius Power" or "Ahriman's Prophecy" (I'm not sure about it, because I haven't played till the end now), but in my eyes this one is full of brilliance, a real gem.

The developers are currently working on "Wilfred, the Hero - Part 2". Here's a link to their homepage:

Ok, I've finished the game and it is pretty short indeed (you can complete it about 5-10 hours). In fact there are just a few locations and after a boss fight when you finally supposed to reach "Froggit Town", the game is suddenly over and says: "To be continued..."

But still I enjoyed every minute while playing this game and hope to see more of Wilfred and Kyr-Stan in the future.

BTW: There was a mistake in my former post. Brandon Abley isn't working on "Wilfred, the Hero - Part 2". Instead he is rewriting the whole game (as far as I understand it) and will publish it for a small ammount of money. But he seems to be a nice guy, because if you can't afford to pay for it, he will give you a copy for free. That's what he wrote in his blog:

"I am also an independent game designer. I am currently working on Wilfred the Hero, which is the update to the older game of the same name that was made for RPG Maker 2003. Because I have a small paid staff, this time, we hope to make the absolute best game ever. I plan to market it for a small sum of money when it’s finished ($5-$10). Don’t worry, though — if have any fans that cannot afford the game or simply refuse to buy it on principle, if they send me an email and state their case, I’ll be glad to distribute a free copy. I’m not interested in making money on this project. I am only interested in covering my investment."

First RPG Maker game where I see sound puzzles. Even if they are easy it's kinda surprising to see them here.

Very not rpgmakerish game, thanks to graphics and original music. It's totally rpgmakerish under surface of course, but feels like something different. I like it.

And I like many hiddens along the way. Lots of them in this game.

Unfortunately it seems that the game will never be finished. At least there are no more comments about that on Brandon Abley's homepage...
