Rise of the Hidden Sun

Post by eMTe »

ABOUT GAME:

Arizona, 1869.

An ancient Indian legend, a mysterious secret society, and a down-on-his-luck cowboy with a knack for finding trouble are about to converge in Rise of the Hidden Sun, a new point 'n' click adventure game in development from Chapter 11 Studios.

Rise of the Hidden Sun will take players across the Wild West on a treasure hunt of epic proportions—and deadly ramifications.

Join cowboy-turned-treasure hunter Jake Dawson on an adventure that encompasses an abandoned gold mine, an underground river, a secret Indian burial chamber, a train robbery, and the discovery of a legendary lost city. And that's just for starters.

When completed, Rise of the Hidden Sun will feature:

* A simple point 'n' click interface
* 100 beautifully illustrated game screens
* An engaging story line spanning dozens of locations in four acts
* A full musical score and sound effects
* Thrills! Chills! Spills! Laughs!
* A free download of the entire game

ABOUT DEVELOPER:

Chapter 11 Studios is an independent, not-for-profit computer game development studio based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our goal is to create a series of entertaining new freeware games in the mold of classic adventures like King’s Quest and The Secret of Monkey Island.

Our first major undertaking is a 2-D point ‘n’ click adventure game called Rise of the Hidden Sun: A 'Rattlesnake' Jake Dawson Adventure. Set in the Wild West in the 1860s, the game tells the story of Jake Dawson, a down-on-his-luck cowboy turned treasure hunter in search of the legendary underground city of Cíbola in the American Southwest.

Chapter 11 Studios was founded by Josh Roberts in August of 2002. Since then, the Hidden Sun design team has grown to include artists, musicians, and other contributors from around the world, including volunteers in the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Spain, and Croatia.

HELP WANTED:

Animator
The animator will create character animations and in-game sequences emulating the project's established artistic style. He or she will also have the opportunity to create entirely new characters. We are looking for traditional 2-D animators.

Pencil Artist
The pencil artist will be responsible for creating background artwork based on our existing concept sketches and design notes, and must be able to emulate the project's established artistic style. Access to a scanner and familiarity with Photoshop or a similar program are required.

Colorist
The colorist will be responsible for digitally coloring background artwork. Proficiency with Photoshop or a similar program is a must, as is the ability to emulate the project's established artistic style.

What about me?
Although we're not looking for anyone else in particular right now, if you think you could contribute to our project in some way, please drop us a line and let us know how you could help. Sorry, we're not far enough along in development to be looking for beta testers or voice actors yet.

And the most exciting part - ARTWORK:
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Holy.... :O

That looks good, and sounds even better. Unfortunately I cannot help with any of the above things, but would if I could! This seems like it could be an amazing game.

What troubles me is that last piece of news is from February'06...

The only way to find out how things are going is the usual one - invitation. I love it. ^^

And with cameos of a classic (Murray) it has to have a good deal of good-time stuffed into it.
It seems the sequel is called Curse of the hidden sun. This reminds me of a monkey island title, so it seems the developers like so many others loved the dear mister Guybrush Threepwood and his adventures.

Been almost a year since last blog post. Considering development pace of other big freeware projects we should not be concerned methinks. :D

Link in first post updated, since it pointed to old address.

Bump! Straight from AGS forums:

---

Progress

(...)

Story: 100%
Puzzles: 100%
Dialogue: 100%
Game Screens: 50%
Music: 100%
Sound Effects: 20%
Animation: 25%
Scripting: 10%

Status Update: February 28, 2009

You didn't think we'd abandonned this project, did you? Here's where we're at:

1) To take advantage of the 1024x768 screen resolution now available in the newest version of AGS, we're in the midst of repainting and re-sizing many of the original screens done several years ago. This is going very quickly, and has been outsourced to a wonderful and enthusiastic artist in Poland.

2) The re-painting is happening simultaneously with the work by our new animation lead, Wyatt Miles of Flash Potatoes, LLC. Many of you will have seen his work on Dave Gilbert's Emerald City Confidential. Wyatt and his team are nearly done with the first 90 second cutscene, an animated movie that opens the game. Expected completion date for that is April, and when it's done I'll post it here as a bit of a teaser trailer.

3) Wyatt is also working on the in-game sprites. These are coming along well, and you can see the Jake sprite above.

In summary: Work continues, it's going really well, but no, I'm not yet ready to announce a release date. Sorry!

---

Project alive!

I am so relieved to hear this is still in progress! This is one of my favourite "in development" games!

There are some more new background art up for this game since end May, and it still looks amazing. I cannot wait for this to publish.

Nothing much new here: Some concept art for episode IV and some new backgrounds. That's it. Instead there is an interview wit George R.R. Martin (writer of "Game of Thrones"). :wondering:

But at least they are still working on the game... :)
