Current Event - Tropical Cyclone Larry.

The far north of Queensland Australia has just been pounded by a catagory 5 cyclone (hurricane) (the strongest and worst there is) this morning. Amazingly there have been no deaths reported and only a few injured.

This cyclone is equal to (some are saying stronger than) Hurricane Katrina that devestated parts of the US. It hit a major town, Innisfail, head on and is now moving inland, destroying towns in its path.

The people of the far north of this state live with the possibility of cyclones hitting them all the time, and are constantly warned to be prepared at the start of each years season. It seems those warnings have had the desired effect. This storm was so bad, people should be dead, it's absolutly incredible that no-one is (so far).

This is really good news, if there really are no human casualties at all. If only the follow-up is handled in the best possible way to provide adequate shelter for the victims, I hope this'll be remembered as a potential humane disaster prevented by fine preparation and reaction. Naturally, the economical damages will be tormenting for the cities hit worst by the hurricane, but I suppose the Australian central government will take part in compensating the people / regions their lost property.

No loss of lives, property is secondary.

The follow up is being handled great. The Premier announced the whole area as a disaster zone straight off, so that means he can call in the army ect immediatly if needed. Supplies and medical aid are already being transported in, but it is difficult because of cut roads. Air transport will start tomorrow (couldn't today for obvious reasons). Unlike the Katrina debacle, help has already started moving in.

its really good to hear that everything is being done as quickly as possible. I hope that everything is sorted out quickly and safely and that it carries on going the way that it is.

Where is it that you and Baldie live?

Are you near the hurricane path...

But I second what people said earlier. Damaged goods is secondary. Let's be thankful that this didn't turn into another grand scale human disaster with loss of lives.
I hope the number will stay at 0.

It is our state, but nowhere near where we live. Baldie and I are in the state capital, Brisbane, which is way south of where this happened. The cyclone didn't affect us down here at all, except for the worry for the people up north in its path.

Glad to hear you are nowhere near!

And we still hope that nothing happens in the casualties departement. Thank goodness some governments know how to take care of such incidents.
