D-link wireless connection

Post by Chroelle »

I have a very annoying issue. I have today set up my wireless connection (finally) but I have problems.

Whenever I try to make the conection encrypted it throws me off the connection. I have tried to find info on what to do but apparantly D-link do not anymore support the model I am using as they released a better version right after. I have a DL514 and the closest thing is propably a DL524.

I really can't seem to figure out what to do, but so far I will run unprotected until somebody helps me, because I am not going back to wired state now. The GF will kill me if I do.

But at least I got rid of the tripwire across the door-panels.

If you know what to do or have a suggestion please tell me, but remember I am not accustomed to wireless connections and routers, so no fancy talk!

I am by no means a pro but...

Okay, I assume you have found out how to access your router configurations? Usually you simply strike the router's address in your web browser (router's IP) and get in to change settings.

Well, some routers require wired connection in order to do that.

I also assume you have found out how to make connection between your router and outer world to work. So basically what you need to do, is to set up passwords and so on.

One option is to use WPA/PSK as authentication method, and TKIP as encryption type. That's not the safest possible method, but much better than open connection *shrugs*

You should be able to find those words from your router config panel. Then set the password you wish to use.

Save the settings, and go to your computer's control panel. (I assume you have XP **SHRUGS**)

Select network connections, and 'create new' Or just edit your current wireless connection by right clicking it and selecting properties. Then select wireless networks tab from the properties window. (Yes. Up there) Select WPA/PSK from upper drop down menu, and TKIP from lower one. Write the same password into lines below, as you wrote on router. Go to last tab on that box (up there again) and check the automatic connection box.Hit Ok untill last damn wirudows box is closed. Cross your fingers and say your prayers. Close your browser. Unplug the network cable which may now be plugged between router and your computer. At the bottom right corner you should see the icon of the connection. right click it, and select 'fix connection'. Wait untill stupid lil windowsish boxes stop flashing on screen. Open browser and type curlysworldoffreeware.com at the address bar. Hit enetr. Pray a lil more...

That's all I can suggest :)

And finally, I try to start updating the site tonight. I still can't promise a thing, but I'll try :) Take care, and say Hi Deeeeeee Ho and congratulations to Tanja and the lil princess :) I am SOOOOOOOoooooo Happy for you all:)

Ok then I only have to find some extra wire before doing it, but it sounds like a good start. I will report back with results. Thanks mate.

keep in mind, generally when setting up the key or password for wireless, your password will probably have to be in Hexidecimal...so 0-9 and A-F...

The router is a DL-514 and it is no longer supported. I tried setting it up with encryption but it was older than I thought and does not use the same form of encryption that you talked about Maz. I tried getting the encryption to work, but it simply plays up on me...
When the line is unencrypted there is no problem finding the conncetion wireless, but as soon as I encrypt it, then it refuses to connect, and I set everything up as they suggest you do... Both on the comp and in the router, and I restarted the whole thing more than a couple of times... It should be working without a problem, but it doesn't....
My brother in law is coming over this weekend, and he might be able to clear it up...

mm.. What are the encryption options C?
WPA1, WPA2? and WEP?

Did you set the channel? It seems to default channel 6, try changing it to 11 or 1 (those are the most usual ones).

And finally, I believe there is versions A,B and C of that router. You should be able to check it from the bottom of the router. I have heard that A and B are really crappy, but C operates at least somehow...

So basically it could be worth one try more.

1. reset the router to factory settings, by holding the reset button for 10 secs.

2. connect to router with cable. hit 192.168.0.1 in your browsers addressbar, use username admin with no password

3. Set WAN connection to PPPoE (I assume that's what you use), hit in your passwd and username (those you got from your ISP) and other connection details if needed. Use autoconnect, no matter what manual says ;)

4. Set your WLAN connection on router. Select g mode (or b/g if it is supported). Set channel to 11 (or if that does not work, try 1). If there is WPA-PSK encryption, use it as I told earlier. Othervice try some other encryption.

5.set your WLAN connection on XP (as explained in my previous post) with same details.

cross your fingers, and I'll do the same with my fingers :D

Well it was WEP...
My brother in law came and decided to try out a few things and after 4 mnutes he had it running smooth. It is however set to only allow certain MAC-addresses, but I dont have a problem with that.

So everything is working fine now, and I have little knowledge of what EXACTLY he did. :D (I was entertaining his son in the meanwhile...)
