I think it's a urban legend, seen it long time ago in oldgames in the portuguese forum

A friend of mine was beta tester for AOL version 1.0. Yes, you read that right. Version ONE. So he got his choice of screen name, and basically nothing was already taken. So he is his first name's initial, and his last name. Problem is, he also has a common last name, so he gets a LOT of email that was intended to go to someone else.

So this sort of article isn't entirely impossible, if conditions are right. But it's probably just an urban legend.
