Genre: Light business simulation
Year: 2004
Creator: VelociGames (founded by Nino Brandt)
Freeware
A magnificent little business simulation; you start your own game development company in 1984, and begin releasing your games for the numerous platforms (or just one, if you prefer) of the time. As the game goes on, piracy begins gnawing the game industry, old platforms become out-of-date and sink into extinction, while the scary new Windows platform and the second and third generation consoles take over. You get to choose the genres, technology level etc. for your games and try to compete with 18,000 real games released since 1984. To assist you in your journey to the top of the game business world, you'll be allowed to hire different kinds of specialists; Rob Huppard, Bill Gateways and Sid Meyer among others are willing to offer you their help, if they can be sure you'll be able to pay their salaries even after the first flop or recession.
Think your sports game Idi Amin Boxing 3D can shake the markets and put Championship Manager into shame? Will your adventure games featuring Lonely Rider prove better and more beloved than Monkey Island II? As odd as it might sound, that might indeed be the case.
For the record, GameBiz 2 is already underway, and it'll be released as a freeware when finished as well.

I got caught up playing this for hours on end. You gotta try it out. It seems however that sometimes it gets a bit too hard to make a GREAT game. Even in easiest setting...

Your right! It´s too hard in many situations. I found it most frustrating that the game gets harder when you sign a contract with a bigger publisher (because you have to pay him a high percentage of the income of your published games)
.
There also seems to be a sequel: "Gamebiz 2". I will look at this soon and tell you if it´s worth playing.

I know about this. I contacted Pitkin yesterday via PM to notify him of it. He was a bit too busy to look at it now, but seemed excited about the release...
I will definently play it once I get a moment free.
Feel free to add a thread about it

Thread was of course added and the sequel is definentl worth a playover too.
Gamebiz is an amazing concept but it seems to me that they should make more options as toward the difficulty, since it seems to be just a little too hard to get things to add up all around. So if you could choose which part of development you would let a trusted worker be in charge of then that would be cool.
This game still has me coming back for it. I love playing it. The rendezvous with old games you loved, and the competition with games that you simply can't compete with. I played on a variety of difficulties, and I like playing easy the most, since...well it is easy, and you get a little more freedom. I would say that the game hs a few glitches, which keeps me from praising it even more.
