Ok first of all it seems we need a robots.txt file. And we definently need it to stop searching the calendar... That is why we get so many hits on the calendar...Googlebots are trying to read through the calendar...And as far as I know that is a pretty LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG post

It seems that the more links a place gets from other places the higher it gets rated too, so do me a small favor guys... Go add a link to this place to your signature on OG. :D Just a suttle little thing. So far it got over 600 links, and quite a lot of them are from my signature on OG...:D
I think lots of you have a lot of posts too in there, so adding some more links gets us higher rating. (Or so I understand - please do not take that as being a certain truth :D)
I got this from the site:
In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high-quality sites that link to their pages.
So dont just change your signatures on OG, change them everywhere... :D
And maybe we should work on getting mentioned some more respected places. I got an idea about a place for Danes at least. Computermagazine websites are always pretty high rated, and sites like moby games might also help out to be mentioned in. If you can think of a highly respected site, then let us know and we will all see if we can't generate a little debate on CWF on that site.

And after searching through alot of Google info, I have now finally set the crawl rate to slower, which will put less strain on our server... Lets see if that helps. Otherwise we still have a problem.

Ok, I added robots.txt to stop Googlebot from browsing our calendar.

/robots.txt

Code: Select all

# This should stop Googlebots from browsing calendar endlessly
User-agent: *
Disallow: /calendar_scheduler.php
This should be enough for now.

Are you sure this does the trick?
I will keep an eye out to see when/if the next occurence of ad-shutdown happens.

Could you maybe remove the 8-ads in the bottom of the front page? Maz wont have time this weekend. If you could replace it with the code already in the footer of the two ads being displyed there it would be great. It seems this could maybe help the problem.

This should happen pretty quickly, as soon as a Googlebot starts to crawl this forum, it first checks that file and then it should know not to go there. Everything else remains as it is. I didn't note that there were any other pages that the Googlebot got stuck on, but let's see.

I'll change the ads if I just remember. I'm not right now at my usual computer, so I don't have access to FTP...

edit: as soon as Googlebot cralws again, you'll be also able to see its analysis of our robots.txt file in Google's Webmaster Tools. I'll add this to my Google Account too, so I can see for myself what happens.

Great. And instantly our ads go up in price :D
Now I am curious if that might help the ads showing better...And not shut down from time to time...

C:
Have you tested the game adding tool again? Is there a bug O_o And if there is, could you please write exact step by step explanation about what you did? That would be a great help :)

Another thingee.. Has anyone tested EDITING the front page news? At least the edit feature on the current site is buggy! I hope the changes I did in dev version have fixed this, but it should be tested.. To be more precise, bug is lying in line endings. Please try editing some FP news which have line endings in it :)

I just tested the news thingy. Seems there is no problem. I am not sure however what you mean by line endings... Is there a problem still with this?

Regardign reviews. It seems there is an issue there when you follow the link to validate the page shows up with a weird header... All links are reduced to dots and the number of new posts are the only thing that show up.

Also there might be an issue with validators of different languages... Is this still an issue? I am unsure if multiple languages will be supported in reveiws section or not...
If a validator is linked to Finnish reviews for example, will he then be able to see English reviews pending too? And will he be able to validate them?

BTW: Is the new Bruce Lee game cool? It seems to have a review pending but it is not showing up when I go to validate reviews? Also please beware that if you use the link after looking at pending reviews to go to the front page, then it is actually leading you to the REAL front site. This means you are out of the testarea... If you however wait and get redirected the you go to the newly created template that you showed me the other day Maz and told me not to panic :D This means it is another frontpage than the one I landed at coming to the testarea.

I will try and add a game now to see if it succesfull.

Alright! Google indexed our site and did not index at least 28022 pages (in our calendar, so that equals 76 years worth of calendar pages) thanks to robots.txt.

Now when I look at Google's Webmaster Tools page, I think we should also add dl.php as off-limits to Googlebot, it seems to like that too. I'll add it as soon as I have time.

Here are some error 404's Googlebot has encountered:
http //curlysworldoffreeware.com/A%20link%20for%20downloading%20this%20hack 404 (Ei löydy) [?] 14.2.2007
http //curlysworldoffreeware.com/Author%20website 404 (Ei löydy) [?] 14.2.2007
http //curlysworldoffreeware.com/N/A 404 (Ei löydy) [?] 16.2.2007
http //curlysworldoffreeware.com/www.questtracers.com 404 (Ei löydy) [?] 23.2.2007
I guess these are all some mistyped URL's in the game database? (I removed the : from those links so that Google won't try to index them again!)

Unfortunately most of them are OG threads where my sig appears :D
That is one of the reasons why I ask you to put a link with name to this site in your sigs on other forums. It is a quick way to get mentioned in a lot of places at once...
