I almost forgot that Ive watched Doubt with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep. The story is inspired by recent accusations of Boston priests molesting children, but movie flies above the crowd-stimulating hysterical tragedy. Featuring some bad, and some (rarely seen in movies recently) bravely yet naturally played scenes (especially by the mother of the boy, just see for yourself) it is deep, moving and asks many questions without giving obvious answers. Hoffman steals the movie for me and, forgetting the visual differences, proves that he is the new Marlon Brando, mumbling his lines with such a huge convenience that you can almost feel presence of the priest in your home. It's a MUST watch!

Forgot to write in here that Invictus is definitely a GO-WATCH movie. I liked it a lot, and although the pace is not fast and furious it is running along smoothly, and you get a feeling of how the people involved changed during the time-period it depicts. Of course it shows precisely what you expect - Mandela being the OH SO GREAT leader and liberator, but it also shows in just 3 sentences at one specific point in the movie that he was also a normal man with normal problems. But he serves the praise that comes his way in this movie, and it is a must see for everyone.

L'Italien
Comedy about a French Arab who pretends to be Italien to get a flat and a better job. Nobody knows (except his sister and a close friend). Then his father suffers a heart attack and asks him to do the Ramadan for him. Of course that causes some trouble and several funny situations.

It wasn't a fantastic movie, but there are some good jokes and scenes and some interesting thoughts about racism, religion and identity. There's a romantic mega happy-end, so maybe it is the right movie to watch it with a girl.

Watched Appaloosa (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800308/) the other day and have to say that there was nothing new to this western in terms of plot, but characters and conversations were brilliant IMO. Fantastic cammeraderie by Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensens characters!

Seems I just saw quite dark movies this week...

Sauna
A Finnish movie (so Zyx might know it) about two brothers at the end of a 25-year-long war between Russia and Sweden in 1595. The brothers are part of a committee that should outline the new frontiers. One of them is a cartographer, the other one an old warrior. One day they come to a strange settling in the middle of a swamp and strange things start to happen...

The movie claims to be a horror movie, but I don't think it really is one. It surely uses elements and motives from traditional horror movies, but in fact it is a drama about sin, guilt, redemption and forgiveness. Very well filmed and acted.

http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi3447128857/

Black Swan
I wouldn't have thought that you could make such a dark movie in the ballet milieu. A young dancer gets the lead role in "Swan Lake" and slowly looses herself in the obsession to play the Black Swan perfectly. Very dark and very disturbing (the David Lynch category). Natalie Portman got the Oscar for best female leading role this year and it is more than deserved. I would've given some more Oscars (e.g. Cinematography, Editing, Sound Editing).

Das Lied in mir
During a stopover in Buenos Aires on her way to Chile, a young German woman hears a children's song and has a breakdown. She finds out that the was born in Argentina during the military dictatorship and was adopted after her parents were killed. But it seems that there are some more lies about her "parents" and her familiy...

Interesting movie about lies, love and identity. Pretty impressing for a debut!

I saw RED (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1245526/) yesterday, and it is kind of a weird mix. Hilarious action-movie, with a very simple plot, and some top-notch actors - Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren just to mention the leads. This movie is not to be taken too seriously, and if you do you will be disappointed. If you don't you will have a blast. Simple lines, twists, scenes and characters simply makes this movie one to watch in my book - but dont take the movie seriously!

I think I've heard about that, but I'm not that into horror films and I rarely watch movies these days. I think the last movie I saw was Wall Street 2, which was a nice movie. I'm trying to find time to see Inside Job, which is a documentary about the financial crisis.

...and of course I'm waiting for the Burn Notice movie, Fall of Sam Axe with Bruce Cambell. :)

I just watched The Social Network, which I thought was pretty excellent. The book it is based on - there is some that say some of it is fabricated and some that don't - but forgetting any of this, just as a movie, it is very tightly directed with solid performances by all involved. If your a David Fincher fan at all (Seven, The Game, Fight Club, Zodiac) then this won't disappoint.

I saw True Grit, recent Coen bros product and Im dissapointed. While I accept the fact, that it was planned to be the straightforward story without usual irony (not true in fact, characters are treated quite humorously, with two cowboys [and all men in general] bossed around by 14 year old girl, funny-looking babyfaced Matt Damon with moustache etc.), it is too slow and dull to be highly entertaining. It meanders between Hollywoodian simplicity and usual Coens tendency of throwing bits of oddity into their films (it feels like they tried hard to fight this urge) and in result lacks an axis, be it offbeat characters, spectacular plot, symbolism or some deeper underlying meaning. It has a couple of funny scenes, but after closing credits I was left in disappointment.

Svinalängorna (Beyond)
A Swedish movie about a family that immigrates from Finland to Sweden in the 70s. The story is shown through the eyes of the daughter Leena (brillantly acted by the young Tehilla Blad). And while she tries to integrate herself to the to the new society, she has to witness how her own family goes down in a devil's circle of poverty, alcoholism and violence.
Director Pernilla August worked with Ingmar Bergman ("Fanny and Alexander") in the past and it seems she learned some things from him. This is her debut movie and she creates some scenes of such an intensity that it's hard to bear. Has been a while since I left a cinema that thoughful and depressed. Certainly not an easy-watching movie for a sunny afternoon, but definitely a movie you should watch.

Not to mention Naomi Rapace (The girl who plays Lisbeth Salander in 3 hit movies!) I think I might need to see this one. Not that I am ready to get all depressed, but it just looks good from the trailer!

Try to see it if you have the chance. I'm not sure if it was released in Denmark yet. I was quite lucky to see it myself. It was shown in my favourite cinema during Leipzig's literature convention. First author Susanna Alakoski read from the book and debated with the Swedish ambassador about the Swedish society and immigration (which was quite interesting), then the movie was shown. There won't be a regular movie release in Germany till autumn.

On that note: If you get a chance to watch a Danish movie called "Smukke Mennesker" (Nothings all bad), then do so. :)

Finally saw The Road. Based on a Cormac McCarthy novel, starring Viggo Mortenson.
I have been wanting to see this for a while, as it was one of the few books that only took me 1 week to read. Very much like the book, almost to a tee, but definitely more elaboration on the inor characters. Fantastic post-apocalyptic movie.

Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain
Still a beautiful movie full of magic and poetry. Jean-Pierre Jeunet is one of the very few directors that really have a unique visual language.

Watched it 4 years ago, and it is simply wonderful...!
Watch anything on his list: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000466/ and be amazed! Especially La Cité des Enfants perdue (city of lost children) is one of my all time favorites. (And dont ever miss a chance of watching Delicatessen!)
